Thanks for that. I'm gonna pay cash I think. It sounds easier.

why is it cheaper to pay cash?

Paying cash you may still have to pre-pay (if they require pre-payment which more and more are) - so still have to go in, guess how much you will spend...then go back for any refund if you guessed wrong.

They have different prices at most fuel stations here for Credit or Cash, about 10c a gallon cheaper for cash. Some (Arco) don't take Credit cards, only debit (remember UK debit = credit here!) or cash and even they charge a fee (ior 50c) for debit card payment.

Really? First I've heard about it. How does it work? Do you just go in to the shop and ask for the cash rate? I thought the pumps are programmed to a certain price and all transactions would go through at that price.
The only thing I've seen before is a deduction if you use the gas stations own credit card.

EDIT - Just looked this up. Doesn't look like it happens round my way -

Do you not get discount for using supermarket loyalty cards either? If we use a Vons (Safeway) card & have spent $50 in store we get 10c a gallon discount and Smiths (Kroger) have a deal with Shell. Swipe your card & the 'per gallon' changes on the pump, same happens when you go in and pay cash - pre-pay pretty much everywhere here in NV.

Yes, can confirm this was the case last week in California. Went to the kiosk at the Arco station and they would not take my credit card, only cash or debit card. Also, some stations showed two-tiered pricing, for cash / credit card.

I do have a Kroger card but do most of my shopping in Aldi or Costco so never really get enough money to get the cheaper gas. Price of gas at Costco can be up to 30c cheaper than Kroger anyway.

Our Costco isn't that cheap for fuel, which it was!!

BTW you can use UK Costco cards in the US no problem :)
