I think they must be same company: I'm with free-online at work and hubby has just signed up with them at his work but his bills definitely show as plusnet. Can't remember how it appears on our bank statement at work, will check if I remember!

  • Sorry just came spotted this conversation!

I just signed up with https://www.esitehost.co.uk.

A mate of mine has been with them for about 4 years and he refered me to them.

I am just about to put a site up with them and got a two year deal for 34 quid including the domain. I used to work as network admin for an isp up north and this is the cheapest and most reliable I have found so far.

They have a cpanel that is second to none, I think in a lot of cases it gives the user too much control!

The Broadband is pretty much down to personal preference, you will be needing to look for a company who has very little downtime, I would steer clear of IOMART personally and anybody associated with them. I have had very bad results in the past with these, I haven't re tried them so they might be OK now!

I personally have a 512 Meg line with wandoo and this suits me down to the ground. With out knowing a little more about your requirements it would be difficult to suggest who to use but I think esitehost is your best bet. They do support frontpage extensions so you will be ok there.

I use Dreamweaver for designing any websites I do, as this is fairly robust and reasonably easy to use with lots of features. I have found that a lot of web hosters provide a free site builder and shopping cart when you buy from them and after trying this I think its great and really easy to use.

Let me know how you get on and if you need anymore advice or help on software please feel free to email me

  • I currently use "Freeola" for my business web site.  I purchased my domain name through their sister site "getdotted" for about £18, this then entitles you to host your site on their servers for FREE without any adverts or pop ups you tend to get with other FREE ISP's.

They will also promote your business in a section free of charge.

Only stipulation is that you can only upload via dialling there server, which is never that long anyway.

YThey also tell you that if you want to send an email with you domain name (eg. anyname@yourbusiness.co.uk) you must again connect to their server, but if you enter in the SMTP of your exisiting ISP then this works just fine.

They also for a very small fee provide you with SQL something or other for Online Shops.

I have been with these for 4 years now and have never had a serious problem, the support desk tel no is not premium rate and they have always answered my queries efficiently.

You could use a cgi script for uploading files instead of dialing up ;)
  • You could use a cgi script for uploading files instead of dialing up.

How do you do this? is it simple to set up?

use http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/fileman/index.htm its free for single use.

Not hard to setup really. One thing you might have to do with freeola is call them up and ask for a cgi bin (which is free). Thats how it use to be done anyway...

on the subject of web hosting, i use, http://www.compila.com they're cheap cheap cheap and very good, i have several accounts with them and unlike oneandone, who i used to use, i have never had a single problem. Also, on the subject of cgi scripts etc, if you're not into programming then try freedback.com, its free and very very easy. alternatively, if you're up to it, try using php for your forms (not compatible with microsoft servers) emailer php, try hotscripts.com for a free script to use. Good Luck. feel free to message me if you need help. If i can i will.
