So on that basis, should we give car thieves BMWs to keep them from stealing?
No, just an extra couple of quid on their benefits so they can buy their booze, drugs or whatever.. rather than nicking something to get it.
I am assuming this is why the benefits are doled out.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

So you are in favour of giving heroin addicts more benefits to buy more heroin, things would get very bad for the country if that happened, you see the more heroin they use then their tolerance becomes higher so therefore have to buy more and more heroin so would receive more and more benefits.
I don't really want the benefit system to start giving heroin addicts a £100 a day, waste of money that.0 -

there is a saturation point i believe. there's only so much heroin the human body can take in 24hrs.
addiction is an illness. of course dealing with it will have more costs than dealing with a healthy person. next you'll be complaining that people who have heart disease cost the taxpayer more than people who are fit as a fiddle. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

People who have heart disease do not generally chose it as a lifestyle.0 -

Why on earth you are mentioning heart disease I don't know.
We are talking about giving drug addicts more benefits so that they don't go out and steal to support their habit.
Yes I know addiction is an illness and giving a heroin addict unlimited benefits is not going to cure that illness, it is just going to make it worse.0 -

who said give them unlimited benefits? however dealing with a person with an illness and out of work (heroin addiction) is likely to cost more than dealing with a person who is well and out of work. if some of that involves paying out more to help the addict so they are less likely to commit crime to fuel their habit so be it. as i understand it heroin addicts aren't just given more cash to go out and buy heroin. they are likely to be given methadone or prescribed heroin which will cost the taxpayer money - just as treating someone with heart disease would. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

really? smokers / overeaters etc etc....
heroin addiction also has a strong genetic element.
all illness / behaviour has the same determining pattern. the interaction between genes and environment. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
