God your all heart you are! It's when people live in the streets that they become ill! Well I used to live in a Housing Association flat and gave it back as soon as I could! Now I'm a home owner and I work! Some people only use it as a stepping stone, and as soon as they can, they make good!

they should do away with council housing. work and pay for your house or live on the street unless you are severely disabled/ill.

not to justify our equine friend but i think white horse might have spent some time on the streets himself. or maybe i'm just thinking of the white horse rider.

I would very much like to know that too! His entitlement (if it were ever there) should have been taken away from him! Police Officers don't earn bad money! There is absolutely no way on this earth that he should have been allowed to keep that flat, get another council flat next door, a property in Kent, and a property in the south of France!!

Absolutely astonishing!! He was only paying £91 per week, and trying to charge others hundreds of pounds! With profit margins like that, it is absolutely no wonder he was able to purchase other properties!

My question is- how did that bent copper get a council tenancy in the first place ? He must have inherited it I would assume or maybe he bought it off that other sleazebag who advertised them for sale on the internet

I live in a council house, i am married my husband works and we have three kids.
I will be honest i never thought i would live in a council house, i thought all people who lived in council were either old or unemployed.
We started off private renting which suited us as before we had kids we moved around the country quite a lot, we assumed it would always be easy to buy a house and there was no rush.

We considered waiting until after we had bought a house til having a baby but i knew i wanted to live back up north near my family when i had a child so decided we could cope with one child and private renting and we would buy a house when i went back to work.

We put our name down on the council list whilst down south just on the off chance really never expecting to get one.

Well we did get one, it was in a decent area near my mums and at only £60 per week for a 3 bed too much of a good thing to give up.

We convinced ourselves we would only be in it for a while til we increased the savings we already had to buy.

Well 8 yrs later we are still here, why?
Because we could never save the 20+% deposit most lenders are asking.
Even if we could all we could afford is a two up two down terrace with no garden.
We spend any spare cash we have doing up the house we are in.

We are in a lovely spot with mostly working familes like us.
I truly believe we are who social housing should be for.

    .

Whilst you seem a very decent person I don't see that 8 years later you should still be there!

These houses should be seen as a short term stop gap whilst you sort yourself out, not a life long cheap house, I also see from your other posts you are or were looking to buy it.

This is also where it is very wrong, these houses should not be for sale at all.

We would all love a nice area with a nice big garden, but you have to earn it before you can get it just like everyone else, not be allowed to stay there forever, it's ridiculous.

Flats are built because they are cheaper than houses.

Really? I thought it was because they are higher density and could therefore fit more people in a certain footprint than the equivalent in houses.

I have always thought thats what council housing was for, you get cheap rent so you can save money up to then move out into your own place, next tenant does the same and so on.

I wonder whats going to happen when the last council houses are sold off.
