No desserts just toast for breakfast, I rarely eat bread myself as I have a yeast intolerance, most families would require more fruit and veg surely? Also I noticed no crisps or biscuits, not a bad thing per se but they are usually consumed in homes with children, only 4 yoghurts??? I eat more than 4 per week. The chicken is factory farmed, I buy my meat from a butcher, it's all free range and he can tell me which farm it came from and it's not as expensive as supermarket meat on the whole. No fresh fish either we ususally have a t least one fish dish per week salmon or cod, too many sausages for my liking too.

I rarely spend £50 on food for three adults for a week however we do have a big freezer and I buy in bulk on certain items such as meat and fish, we don't use frozen veg only fresh. I can see the idea as a starting point for people who buy ready means and live on takeaways to save money and switch to a healthier diet but I think most of us on here are already doing better for less.

I've just processed my order for Sainsbury's. I tried to get it down to £50 myself but ended up being £68 for a week with meals, lunches for me and little one at home, packed lunches for DH and DD. The £50 a week set thing wouldn't work for me even tough I tried to beat it but if it's healthy enough it's a great learning tool (I'm learning!) to get the shopping down.

i think what they are offering could probably be bought for cheaper if you shopped around in various different supermarkets and independent grocers - personally i wont be opting for it! :D

theres another thread about this i'm sure the mods will ad dthis 2 it so you can have a read threw

my opinion is that it's a good idea for people who don't meal plan, but i do think it's unsuitable for small children, i have 3 and we use about 5 yogurts aday nevermind 3 a week, and my boys would freak if we didn't have loads of fruit in, my fruit for the week is usually around £7-£8, and even with all that i still feel i can do it cheaper myself and include snacks

  • Yes I noticed there were no snacks too. Also if you're on such a tight budget I doubt you would spend so much on grapes??!!

How much did they spend on grapes ?
We are on a tight food budget (£40-50 max) but always buy lots of fruit (including grapes!).

  • It says 1kg grapes 4.98 but then underneath it says they were half price so 2.49 - but it still seems a lot.

i was not keen, I usually spend about £50 a week for the 3 of us and I think that we eat better than the plan given by Sainsburys.

I do shop around however and think this is the secret to getting the most for you money.

If you have never meal planned and shopped on a budget then it will give people a starting point

I think it's a good idea with some decent basic recipes. Of course it isn't going to cater for coeliacs/allergies/food intolerances/atkins dieters/other special diets etc - it's a basic seven day meal plan. It's just a marketing exercise aimed at the 'average Joe' - if you live with allergies and intolerences you know (or quickly learn!) how to adapt a recipe/meal plan, I have a food allergy I certainly do. Yes, there's toast for breakfast most days, but some people DO eat toast everyday - I eat 2 Weetabix with hot milk for breakfast everyday, without fail. Also, someone said it only has 4 yoghurts a week and they eat more - well, I don't eat 4 a week, maybe not even 4 a year! No desserts? I rarely, if ever, have desserts - I have fruit if I fancy something sweet. Everyone is different, I bet no-one would follow it exactly, but they would/could use it as a useful guide and tailor it to their requirements. I expect most people who do use it would only pick one or two recipes from it to try.

It's impossible to create a simple 7 day meal plan that caters completely for everyone. :)

And no, I'm not going to use it. I didn't use Jamie's 'meals for a fiver' either!!

    Hi DianaMattos

I've added your thread to the existing one on the sainsburys meal plan to keep the replies together.
