Running without anti virus isn't wise, uninstall mcafee and avg, install free version of avast, post a hijackthis log, and installed ram and commit charge, which can be both found from task manager, performance.

Thank you to everyone who helped. The netbook now has avast anti virus and open office, still with windows 7 and is working really well. Looks like we wont be having it now as it works so well they want to keep it or us pay quite a bit for it which we cant afford at the moment. But they are happy.

I am going to install avast on my laptop and see how that goes. Its not slow, it just loses everything which i think is a virus but we have had virus protection on it every time its happened.

Some infections do that, presumably everything is working now, so post a hj log if it returns. Things like vuze toolbar and rapport don't help, consider uninstalling them

If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. Run Windows update, your XP service pack is SP2 which out of date

Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download). In windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 5 minutes, then ok, ok. Find c:\program files\cleanmem\mini_monitor, run it and right click the icon (near the clock) to set it to automatically run at startup, show percentage to keep an eye on your ram use. If your machine is still slow after doing everything listed, post your commit charge and installed physical ram details from task manager performance
