Samsung N140 or not???

Hiya

Just wondering if you clever people can help me.

My laptop is very very old and probably going to die very shortly!!! I can cannot afford another one but I do need something for my college course and my website.

My sister has a netbook Samsung N140 which she doesnt want as it runs very very very slow. I have been reading on here about taking off the software (it has just finished its 1 year trial) and reinstalling MSE anti virus and open office. Would this make it run as fast as my laptop and would this be easy to do (i am not very techie). If so would it be worth me buying this netbook? I basically need it for internet and some spreadsheets and some word documents. I currently have openoffice on my laptop and am happy with that but she seems to think it should only be used for net and will need to be upgraded if want documents etc. It has 2gb ram already.

And how do i get rid of windows 7 and what can i get for free to replace it?

I hope that makes sense!!!

Thanks x

    One year trial? :)

For how much is she selling it?

Should run fine with Windows 7 Starter and 2GB RAM.

You can just run a destructive Factory Restore if the Recovery Partition is intact.

    Thanks for replying.

all the software had a 1 year trial which has now finished and asking for codes for the full versions which cost more money.

Will find out later how much she wants for it.

It is very slow. Dh has got it going a bit faster but it is still quite slow. When I am typing it is a few words behind all the time (and i am not that fast!!! lol).

What will a destructive Factory Restore do?

    Thanks x

It will take everything back to when the Netbook was first purchased. Will also likely remove any problems with malware.

So does that mean i will have the 1 year again on the office stuff (although she doesnt have a code for it so i wont be able to use it anyway)? Do you think its the malware that has made it slow? I am so sorry for asking all these questions.

    Thanks

If you have the machine with you, why not give the Restore a whirl?

very old laptops often last forever, and don't need to be slow

Cleanup your startup items on both machines, and it won't be slow or seemingly about to die, takes half an hour or so.

avast 6 free version is faster/better/lighter than mse

stilltheone - thanks. they have just had it back from being restored as it was going so slow and had the extra ram put in at the same time.

closed - thanks. but my laptop wont last much longer. i lose everything every few weeks and have to put in the original disks to get it working. so far i have managed to but the disk drive is a bit temprimental so not sure how long i can keep doing it for. will read through that thread now and see if it will help, thank you, even if i dont buy hers i think she will appreciate it going faster when i take it back (borrowed it for a few days).

    Thanks again x

Had it back? These are things they could have done themselves.

2GB RAM and still going slow?

Follow closed's instruction for cleaning up start items and un-installing unwanted programs.

As to the laptop, what symptoms are you experiencing?

    make and model?

they are even worse than me techie wise. lol Dh thinks macafee was partly to do with being slow although thats still on he has turned off the constant scanning of files (i think) so its a bit better but still slow. I will follow the instructions and see what happens.

my laptop is a fujitsu siemens amilo pro. Every few weeks it just wont get on line or do anything. when i click on internet nothing happens as with all other programs. I end up reloading everything. We thought it was from viruses and put on the AVG free one but after a day it happened again. But touch wood its been fine for about 3 weeks with no virus protection on so i am limited what i can do on it as dont want to put in passwords. I am basically just using it for typing up my college work. :(

    Full model number. :)

Download and install and run Speccy(untick the option to install the Google Toolbar).

Once the program has gathered the relevant info, click on 'File' and choose 'Save to .txt file' or similar. Save the file to your Desktop and upload it to a filehosting website, such as FileFactory(Click on 'Browse' in order to navigate to the file).

Send the link to me via PM. This is for the laptop.

Will look at the Netbook next if closed hasn't taken care of it.

You can post a Hijack This log for the Netbook. Use the Quick Start guide.
