B&Q wouldnt give me a full refund

Options
The missus bought 3 rolls of wallpaper from B&Q - when i went to hang it one had a faulty pattern. No prob so i skipped to the last one and all was fine... 2 rolls was also enough too

Took the roll back and they refused to give me a refund - the missus had paid on her debit card and it "had to be the same payment". I couldnt have it on my debit card (diff no.) and i couldnt have cash. All they would give me was a credit voucher (£20), which i didnt want.

It seems abit grey really - Are debit cards as good as cash? And surely they are at fault for supplying faulty goods. I went out of my way and now so will my partner (who is 8 months pregnant) all down to their faulty goods and lack of understanding. Is it worth a rant to HO?

Refunds have to go back on the card that was used as payment, cant you just go back with the wife another day ?

The same thing happened to me , I asked Hubby to take some things back to B& Q as I was very ill. In the end my Husband took the refund in vouchers as there was no way I was going to be able to get to the store for a long time. I found most stores now operate this system of only refunding to the card used.

b&q were correct in the information they gave you. When you require a refund it has to be given back to you in the manner of which you paid. ie. paid by card it has to go on the same card, paid by cash you get cash.

Apparently mr divadee says its illegal to do it any other way!!!! some places do flout this law, but most big chain stores will stick to this.

could you not take your wifes card in and get the refund put on it assuming you know her pin number that is??? i use mr divadees card for allsorts :D in stores as i know the pin :D:D

This policy is the same through many stores - I had a similar experience returning DS stuff to M&S (originally bought with DW's Switch card) - was told no way and we had to wait until she next went to the town.

Just sounds like a reason not to give you your money back personally - I cant think of a reason why it would be "illegal". Maybe in strict terms of the contract you enter into when doing the transaction? Or some wierd part of the consumer credit act? But if we are getting nitty then they supplied faulty goods :( I dont have a problem receiving a credit voucher if i took back something i chose by mistake, they offer a 28 day refund policy which is on top of the sale of goods act

Funny you should mention M&S as the missus friend was over when i got back - she said she had just taken a faulty jumper back and got a cash refund no quibbles though originally paid by card

The reason shops will only put it back onto the original is to stop people stealing things and then trying to get the money back from the company, simple really!

It also means you could buy something on a credit card and have it refunded onto a debit card - meaning you have had a cash advance for nowt.

Me and hubbie have joint Amex credit card, but our card numbers are different, whereas usually if a joint account numbers are the same (they are with another joint credit card we have). If I bought something on my Amex and he tried to return it on his, would he be refused even though they are joint cards.

yes, as just by looking at the card, having different numbers and probably only showing one name, the store have no way of checking they are refunding the person who paid.

its a money laundering and fraud prevention system.
