Is now the wrong time of the year ie have i missed the boat

decided late last year but have only got round to sorting (silly i know) planted 36 seed potatos in bags 5 days ago so fingers crossed they produce something

today i have brought

onions
carrots
leeks
cucumber
tomatos
cauliflower
purple sprouting brocolli

lots of little pots and compost, however sat in the car on way home ive now wondered if ive left it too late and if this is a bad choice for a starter, im planning to grow in black pots (old flower pots from the supermarket) and maybe grow bags if i can get some

am also moving in few weeks hence its in bags and pots untill i can see about setting up a proper patch next year as yet to view my new house

any help mega appreciated, have 3 children looking forward to helping 'grow' there veggies

I'm assuming your bought seeds and not plants.

Our of your list I would say that only Leeks and Purple Sprouting Broccolli would be a touch late now but not late enough in either case to mean you won't get a good crop. You mights struggle to get Tomatoes ripened outside if you plant now as well.

just out of curiosity, how many bags did you plant your potatoes in?
I've seen tomato plants being sold in lots of places if you decide it's too late to grow them from seed.
I started my cucumbers 2 weeks ago and wish I hadn't. they're growing so quickly I worry how big they'll be by the time it's warm enough for them to go out

You could give a few of them a go and see how many com up/whether they grow in time. Save some of the seeds for next year and then you can get started early on in Feb or March. :-) It's worth experimenting with growing things, especially if this is your first year. So don't worry too much about it, bung those seeds in some compost and see what happens. :-) Most importantly, have fun!

Car boot sales are a great place to get cheap small plants if it is too late to start off some seeds. I got some great tomatoes for 50p per pot in the past week, also got a tray of celery as I hadn't been successful with that.

You can often get trays of leeks and other plants which will give you a good head start without a lot of cost from garden centres.

    Hi there,

It is my first year of growing to, and i planted a lot of my things this weekend. For most things i think you are ok but i am pretty sure that leeks take a looonnggg time to grow.
As was mentioned, i have a few tomato plants that had already started to grow at the garden center as well as ones i have planted myself.
Most packets of seeds say when you can sew them on the back and a lot go up to June.
I am also growing everything in pots because i am renting at the mo. Can't wait to get my own garden!

If you are just starting out, search for 'claire's allotment' on youtube. She has been a lifesaver for me.
Redundancy isn't fun - comping is!

As you are in Kent, your growing season is a long one, so virtually all that list will be fine. As suggested if you plant only enough seeds plus a couple of spares the rest of the seed should be saved and popped in an air tight box with one of those little Silica sachets you get with electrical stuff, and then keep them in the Fridge, that way they will last way longer than the Sow by Dates on the packets.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

    Thank you all xxx

plenty of seeds so wil have a trail run this year to see what works and what doesnt, will as just suggested store the seeds well and start earlier next year (hopefully something will grow this year to keep the incentive up )

recived another 40 potato tubers from thompson and morgan is it too late to chit (i think it is) them or can these be stored untill next year ? the ones i recently planted were from 99p store and had long white 'roots' so they had already started, what i recieved today looks as smooth as what i have recently brought from asda

sorry for all the silly questions

no such thing as a silly question. i dont think its too late, maybe a bit late but it depends if we get an indian summer or not. i'd go a head and plant. you should get some produce. i havent planted all my seeds yet, a have tiny sprout seediling and cabbage too. i tend to plant up until mid May. some seeds are also better after mid June like rocket, fennel and chinese greens, the declining light stops them bolting. someother seeds are planted in august or later ,like certain cabbages and some broad beans.

Our kids have planted peas, carrots, raddish, spring onion etc last weekend.
