recived another 40 potato tubers from thompson and morgan is it too late to chit (i think it is) them or can these be stored untill next year ?

I have just put my tubers in from Thompson and Morgan. Some were put in when I received about 10 days ago, unchitted. I left the rest on a shelf in my shed and when I planted them out yesterday they had started to chit.

As they are maincrop potatoes, chitting isn't as essential. However, I'm not sure the tubers would last until next year, they are likely to turn to mush.

    Thank you all xxx

plenty of seeds so wil have a trail run this year to see what works and what doesnt, will as just suggested store the seeds well and start earlier next year (hopefully something will grow this year to keep the incentive up )

recived another 40 potato tubers from thompson and morgan is it too late to chit (i think it is) them or can these be stored untill next year ? the ones i recently planted were from 99p store and had long white 'roots' so they had already started, what i recieved today looks as smooth as what i have recently brought from asda

sorry for all the silly questions
Don't worry about chitting, stick them straight out, I don't think they would last till next year without serious commercial storage.

I would say plant the tubers to. I doubt they will last till next year and you could still get some lovely potato surprises :)
I've heard they are good for the soil so ever if they do rot you will have lovely soil afterwards!

huge thank you for all the contributions on here for me :) have 2 of the 3 little ones off today (polling day ) so in a bit were off to our tiny garden to start some seeds off, they should hopefully still be in the smaller pots over the next 2 weeks as were on the move, viewing the new place tomorrow so will have more idea on size of the new garden this year i will stick to pots but next year will try and get some sort of veg plot in the garden, to grow direct in the ground is there anything as such i need to do well in advance ?

also am i being silly but will growing in the pots/buckets prevent slugs etc or do i need to still protect everything from them?

I don't think there's anything you need to do well in advance but I think it's good to get your veg beds dug over and manured in the autumn.
Unfortunately, pots don't deter slugs! You can get copper tape to put around the pots which is supposed to help but I haven't tried it myself.

Last thing I wanted to say is - Wow you've got a lot of potatoes! Will it be easy for you to move them all when they're growing?

i am hoping so, there in the bags from 99p shop and there each half full of compost at present (i hope to not have to add more untill after the move) ive done a few online removel quotes so i have put in the info what i have if they dont move them friends will with blankets on the bottom of the car we should get all in the boot in a single trip (or brother has a works van :) )

still have the 40 tubers to plant in a box from thompson and morgan but need alot more compost and bags to be able to grow as i think 4 tubers per bag must be the limit (can anyone let me know if thats too many ?) i was thinking about freecycling some tubers as i have 36 in the bags already i should have held off buying more .

slugs wise was going to try beer traps if i had to

The bags I'm using say 3 per bag but 4 should work too... maybe you'll just get smaller potatoes? I'm sure someone can give you a better answer - it's my first year of growing.

I like the idea of beer traps but I couldn't deal with emptying them. I'm trying nematodes this year but not sure if there'd be any slugs around anyway as it's been so dry.
  • I found some slugs on my Cukes the other day. Fortunately, they are huge and it doesn't seem to have affected them.

I've put out a beer trap, not sure why you would have an issue emptying them? If you use something with handles and some rubber gloves, it's not that bad a job.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
