If your portable drive is formatted in FAT, it won't work...as that filesystem can only hold individual files of 4GB maximum. You have to format the external HDD to NTFS. Don't do it before transferring everything from the drive beforehand.

I won't be able to do it then as I've literally just bought a new pc and have loads of files stored on my external HDD, which can't go anywhere at the moment.

As to the other files, use DVD Flick to create your DVD Video disc. It's easy when you know how, don't give up.

Had to grin at the "don't give up". I have found patience that I never knew I had but after spending the best part of 3 days on this and really getting nowhere I'm close to admitting defeat for now until I can find some hardware that works directly with my pc. All the transferring files etc is making it so difficult.

I'll have a go with DVD Flick wotsit when I can face it :)

Thanks again for replying to my posts. Do you think the mpeg4 file or the Dazzle movie file will work with DVD Flick?

I just used the one that came with my pc, the Windows one.

So revert to DVD Flick using the other files. DVD Flick is ridiculously easy. Try each of the files. DVD Flick will indicate as to whether it is recognised or not. Try it now. ;)
You also have the option of sharing files with your other computer using your router. So you can transfer the files that way. No need to use the external HDD.

Don't be disheartened. It's easy. You just have to learn how.

Something else to look at when you have the time.

    So many possible solutions.

Just had a quick read of that. Now we're getting really complicated. My eyes starting glazing over at the networking, however I did see someone had the same as me - Windows 7 pc and Vista laptop. Might be brave and have a look tomorrow but haven't got time to try now as poker is calling me :).

Just went to download the DVD programme you recommended and they are asking for Company Name etc. Won't let me bypass it either.

yes, when I click on that link it brings up a page where you have to give email address (which is fine) then asks for company details, job title etc. Says something about Windows 7 Migration. Maybe I'm getting a different page to you?

You most certainly are. Here is a direct link

You should check for malware when this is done.

I'm on a VHS transfer 'project' myself at the moment, and at the risk of repeating myself; get a Panasonic DVD recorder with a Hard Drive, and you won't look back.

No agonising over file types, no software issues, no networking issues; you plug the camcorder in, record to HDD, edit it, and write to DVD. You don't need to think about it, you won't need to come here for advice on any aspect of it, it'll just work

I had no idea you could edit it once recorded onto a DVD HDD. How much would one cost approx?
