Hi,

I have a friend whose internet is very slow. It runs through PlusNet, and rarely gets speeds above 0.5Mbs. Can't watch Iplayer, and Youtube always buffers. Here is the information from the router - can anyone tell me if it is the router or the line that has issues?

They must be a long way from the exchange, with 66dB downstream line attenuation they are not going to get any more speed than they are getting already with any other ISP.

The only answer is move closer to the exchange.

Oh! Are there any alternatives? They are also not in a cabled area...

As above they are doing well to get any service at all.
No landline based alternative atm, if they are on a main exchange there is always the possibility of BT rolling out its Infinity FTTC service.
Check their exchange on the Samknows site.

Not really...Fit an I-plate. Fix any internal wiring issues. Remove as much equipement from the line as you can. Fax machines, extra phones, sky boxes etc... Attach the router to the main BT socket.

Yes, first thing to do is plug the modem router directly into the test socket behind the master socket front plate.

it's a relatively easy check and can sometimes prove whether any internal phone extensions are causing problems.

If the results are much better using this socket then it points to some internal wiring causing problems.... if this is the case then an 'i plate' may improve matters (or cut the '3rd ringer wire' from your extensions)
