It never ceases to amaze me that builders allocate parking places, yet do not indicate on the ground which space(s) belongs to which house

Why is this a police matter? It is a civil dispute and they will not be interested.

HOWEVER, they will be interested in your second suggestion if you damage the car in the process - you'll be the one in trouble.

I had a similar issue which lead to some vehicle damage so I called the police. The person I suspected of doing it also told me they were going to park on my land if I dared to park on the road near their house again.Anyway, the police said if they did so to let them know immediately and they'd come and make them move.
Probably to stop a civil matter potentially turning into a criminal one.

But didn't he say the neighbour would only do this if he parked on the road near his house?

    Yes.

Can you explain what you're having a problem with?

Wouldn't it give potential burglars a nice little indicator as to who is in and who isn't?

I doubt you'll be the only space owner having this problem. Do you have a management company/residents association? How about it pays for all the spots to be numbered/bollarded/etc?

If it is just you, dig out the deeds to prove it.

No more than a car parked/not parked on a drive. Some flat developments have the car parking spaces numbered anyway.
