I bought two new cars in Sept 2009. I intend to keep both for at least 6, and probably 8+, years. I think that will be a reasonably economical way of owning cars whose history is entirely known to me.

New car not what i would buy choice would always be Dealers Ex Demo Cars manufacturer requires dealer to have xx of model range available for test drive . That is usually as a company car for salesmen and other members of staff changed/sold usually every 3 or six months often at a significant discount to new . Problems are taken care of immediately one does not drive around in a car with a squeak that a customer want to test drive .

I'd be willing to bet that a good 75% of these are courtesy cars though

It doesn't really matter. This thread is about new cars in general. If it was about a specific manufacturer, model, variant etc., then I see the point, but it isn't. ;)
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

But buying new makes much more sense from some manufacturers than others.

If no one bought new cars, regardless of the manufacturer, there would be no used ones to buy.

New cars can be cheaper than nearly new ones (up to one year old I would say)

Check the prices at Drivethedeal and broadspeed first. Then see if autoebid can beat them.

Different companies may have different deals for different manufacturers.

Once you have checked all of the above, you will have a price that will be very hard, if not impossible to beat for a first registered car.

I have never found buying a 'demonstrator' cheaper than buying new. I've tried it with Toyota, Honda and just two weeks ago Audi.
The demonstrators are usually specified with loads of extras that I don't want or need, thus making the list price much higher than one specified by myself. The only concession I have had to make this time is to have a car ordered for stock, otherwise it would have been a 3 to 4 month wait. So I have had to pay for metallic paint and communications pack, this was the car with the least specified extras, but I managed to squeeze an extra £500 for my P/X by digging my heels in.
By the way, for all you 'demonstrator' lovers, one (I picked out) could not be found anywhere on the dealers premises (although advertised on Audi website as available), they couldn't find it so "maybe it's with a customer" was their only response. Another one I had picked out from the website was unavailable (at the time) due to being vandalised along with four other demonstrators and waiting for replacement glass !!!
So enjoy your pre-regd demo's, my 'new' car arrives on Wednesday.
