Been off here awhile - might explain my current situation. Decided to take a closer look at my affairs today and here's my summary:

Been an O2 home BB customer since April 2010, had an O2 phone but now out of contract hence the loss of my discount. I expected to be paying £12.50pm (didn't think it was worth loading a redundant O2 PAYG with £10 every 3 months in order to save just £5).

Checked my account and I'm now paying £14.50! That was a bit of a surprise to say the least.

Further scrutiny shows I'm on O2 Home Broadband Standard, thought I would be on the 'Legacy' thingy - headache from searching online for details of this mythical package.

To further add insult to injury, speedtests (thinkbroadband and speedtest.net) show that I'm getting 1.1Mbps download!!

I'm now out of my O2HBB contract and would like to move on or make a better choice.

Help!

  • Bumpity-bump.

Reset my router and my speed readings via the test sites went up to expected levels :D.

Still have to sort out the issue of making sense of my O2 package or failing that, finding my next Home BB provider.

Home Broadband Standard is indeed one of their 'legacy' products, that has been its name for quite a few years. Nothing wrong with the name. Their website though now shows their new packages which have different names.

O2 increased all their prices from April 1st, and Standard increased from £12.50 to £14.50. You should have been sent a letter informing you of this. This forum and many others have been full of this news for some time, obviously you have not looked here...

You will be hard pushed to find a cheaper package than O2, even at their increased prices, so will be foolish to move. Mind you, a lot of the O2 forums are a lot quieter now that the moaners have left O2....

you need to speak to o2 retention team .
the minimum you will be offered is a £2.50 discount to stay on the old package for 12 months.

Basic maths will show you that by spending £40 pa on the PAYG top up you will save £60pa, so still worth it as you're £20 in profit.
O2 informed customers both by email and by text of the increases.
If you're OOC, why not just ask them for a retention discount for a further 12m contract?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I didn't get either.
  • Thanks everyone, I did indeed get a letter but put it away as I thought I was leaving them anyway. Thanks.

So I'm on a 'Legacy' product? If I phone retentions and sign up for 12 months won't they move me away from the 'legacy' BB?

I have 2 phones already and I don't need the O2PAYG. It already has about £20 unused credit! Seems like a waste IMHO. Even if I moved my giffgaff PAYG back to O2, my usage will not even scratch the £10/3months top up. For instance, my giffgaff PAYG still has the remnants of the £15 topup from October last year!!

Been thinking of Plusnet but still unsure, considering Sky as I plan to get Sky TV in the next few months. My mate's got Sky BB and each time I use it I've had no trouble.

It might seem like a waste but it does end up saving you £5 and the extra spent will last you a lifetime in credit :)
    Nice to save.

I'm never gonna use the O2 credit and I have no family members who can, :o.

I too was out of contract recently and saw that sky broadband was unlimited and only £10 per month compared to my now £14.50. Phoned up o2 retentions and by finding an old o2 sim card I was offered 6 months free broadband on the standard legacy product, then 6 months at 9.50.

So 6*9.50, plus £40 for topups is £97 for a year of unlimited broadband INCLUDING the £40 pay and go credit. Compared to £174 (£14.50 per month), well worth phoning up.

They may offer you a deal on one of the new packages, but if you insist on staying on the old one they don't push.

Hmm.... tempting. If I can get that deal might get me to stay. Trouble is, what to do with £40 of PAYG credit?

Furthermore, by going to Sky HD for everything, I only pay £54.50pcm.
