I'm supposed to be collecting my new Smart car at the weekend. Sold my car this week so now car now.

Garage has called tea time to say whilst valeting it the chap noticed that the perspex roof has a crack in it. They can't get another roof for 2 weeks and don't have a car to lend me. They are calling back tomorrow.

Do I accept a brand new car that needs to be repaired before I've even had it. I'm buying a new car for goodness sake not one that's already needed a repair?

Can I say I don't want it and insist another one is ordered?

They have a forecourt of cars, can't they let me have one in the meantime?

What would you do/accept?

Want to be prepared for when he calls tomorrow.

Many thanks for any help!

At the end of the day its only superficial and not a major fault. I would suggest you either take the which car you paid for and get it in writing that there is a problem with the roof which they will resolve free of charge or take an alternative if offered so long as it is same model and spec as the one you paid for. Or are you after something more?
  • As above if you accept the car get it all in writing what they are promising to do and have a deadline etc so it just cant go on and on. How about asking them to either pay for a hire car for the 2 weeks whilst you wait or even go halfs on it?

Alot of dealers have all the forecout cars financed and they can't be lent out due to the terms of the finance.

Cars on the forecourt are probably not taxed either.

why are you buying a new car? It'll be worth £1000 less by Monday.

You could ask them to pay for a hire car from a local company for 2 weeks.

I wouldn't accept the new car, if u get heavey rain over the next two weeks then wet interior/carpets etc could happen.

Many new cars have small issues like this fixed before the first owner gets them - I often see the SMART repairer out at my local dealers - he's very good and you wouldn't know. The garage are being honest with you, and its something that happens with perspex roofs, so not something to be unduly worried about.

If not having a car for a couple of weeks is a big inconvenience then try to work something out with the dealer. They may have a trade in they could let you use?

Remember with a smart car every panel is able to be changed thats how they designed it. I wouldn't accept it with the crack in the roof, as some of the other posters have said if it rained you may get damn carpets or seats. Also as others have said if it's an inconvenience to be without the car for a couple of weeks speak to the garage they should be pulling out all the stops to give you something to fill that gap at THEIR cost.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

Eh?! Perspex is a brand name for acrylic glass..

Perspex is a polymer of methyl methacrylate, the methyl ester of methacrylic acid

    From wikipedia..
[Acrylic glass] is often preferred because of its moderate properties, easy handling and processing, and low cost, but behaves in a brittle manner when loaded, especially under an impact force, and is more prone to scratching compared to glass.

If I were the OP, I would expect financial compensation for the inconvenience..
