and where else would a thinking driver consider increasing their speed, if not where the road was clearer.....and possibly more suitable for overtaking?

That would be fine, but there isn't much thinking going on when it comes to driving at 25mph on roads that are perfectly safe, just can't be overtaken on.
Convoys occur because those up front fail to overtake at the appropriate time or place.

Maybe they don't wish to overtake?

This is what causes anger amongst drivers further back in the convoy.....not the lead vehicle!

If the driver in front is proceeding at a pace one is happy with, then drop back a bit to leave extra room , for those who wish to go faster, to pass and pull in if necessary, before they tackle the next vehicle in line.

But will that happen? no way....every body drives along tight up the backside of the vehicle in front...
Absolutely correct, but I've been caught out on this one more than once. Join road, meet slow driver, get to overtaking section, car speeds up just enough that overtaking isn't viable, assume driver is just getting up to speed, next corner, bloody 25 again.

They don't do it twice if I am behind them. 2 second gap until safe to overtake, then past them at earliest convenience.

Problem, as you say, though is others forming a half-mile, inpenetrable convoy behind them. This causes risk-taking.

What bloody p1sses me off though is the driver who seemingly doesn't want anyone to overtake. I had one this afternoon who decided to accelerate and sit in the middle of the two lanes when going up a bank (where a crawler lane had been set up). Then moved into the inside lane just long enough to allow one or two cars past, while the rest had to file in.

It always seems to be the erratic slow drivers that engage in this sort of thing. It's almost as if they want to meet up with an axe-murderer on the road one day :rotfl:

Lol, well i would hope most people know within 5mpg how fast they are going. but what i see on a day to day basis i doubt it
But unfortunately 35 in a 30 Quite rightly can get you a ticket so not that good a method;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

 - even worse when you're in an ecobox that's too wheezy to overtake without a clear mile ahead

a good driver knows what speed they are roughly doing without looking at the speedo.!

I know the exact speed I am doing at any given time. It's quite easy to find out.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Well in a sense it's not poorly placed but ideally situated to catch speeders before they have time to slow down

But yes there can be unfortunate side effects

Aren't they supposed to be a deterrant rather than concentrating on catching drivers?

Sort of gives the lie that they ain't revenue collection devices doesn't it?

the only people who seem to be worried about speed cameras are the drivers who speed, the answer is simple, stick to the speed limit and you will be ok.

    Or "yes they can".

It is a natural reaction for some drivers. They see a camera van and automatically brake without a clue to what speed they're doing and no idea if anything is following. We all know were the fault lies but 3 miles over the speed limit seems to be a greater concern to the authorities than driving too close or in a daze:mad:

No it is not a "yes they can". Even you admit its a natural reaction for some drivers. Thats some as in the rubbish ones.

I refer you to post #56

Anyone who goes past a speed camera at or 1, 2, 3 or 4 mph under (or over obviously) the speed limit is an idiot in my book.

But by your own admission they exist, yes?. Therefore you have to consider that type of driver as a hazard, rubbish by your definition or otherwise.

Some drivers will hit the brakes in panic at the sight of a speed camera or police car. They may be 1/2 asleep but they are very real and anyone who doesn't realise that has their head in the clouds too.;)
