Tesco Pricing Policy

Tesco stores are awash with traps for the unwary.
Huge stack of N***** coffee on the end of the aisle one day, with a huge price sticker (and a very good price it was too!) so a quick check and it showed the price displayed was for a different product, and not for the coffee. How many people read the price label?

One that always had me puzzled was large tins of chick peas 48p, and the small tin 53P.
I concluded they were trying to drive the small tins from their stock lists.

I was in Tesco at Newton Aycliffe today (for my sins) and picked up two packs of the Coco Pops that were advertised as "better than half price" at £1.33 per pack. These were piled at the end of an aisle in the usual way they do their promo's.
As I walked down the cereals aisle I noticed a shelf edge label that was for the same product with a price of £2.

After a discussion with the duty manager I was given a "double the difference" refund.

My case was that if the product was £2 before the new promo kicked in then the current price should be no more than 99p.
Clearly what they have actually done is inflate the price to make the customer think they are getting something thay are not.

I spot these little things regularly in there but fortunately I do not do not do the bulk of my grocery shop in there.

    Robbing stewards that they are.

But it could have been the £2 price label that was the mistake. We shouldn't have to decide which is the error though.

Given that these errors work both ways, I'd say it's more likely !!!!-ups rather than deception.

Personally, I ignore offers and base my decision on whether the price represents good value to me.

Tesco baked beans in tomato sauce 420g, took a bit of time to find the price on the shelf, gobsmacked when I did. Cost 30p per can, and a pre packaged 4 x 420g pack cost.........£1.68p. Buy more, pay more

Own brand baked beans are a KVI and prices - particularly for the 4 x 420g pack - tend to bounce around depending on the state of the Tesco-ASDA price war. And so depending on who is discounting what and who is following who's price lead, various discrepancies can arise.

It's the old story. Don't assume that a bigger pack is better value and be prepared to do some mental arithmetic on the shop floor.

I nearly fell for one of their "mistakes" today, Tesco's own brand sugar free cordial is £1.35 for one bottle or £2.75 for two. Bargain !!! Not!!!! I'm going to limit my shopping in Tesco's from now on, I don't believe for one minute this is an error.

Says 1 for £1.35 or 2 for £2.50 on the website.

Known Value Item. It's marketing speak (sorry for that) that refers to items where people remember what they paid for it last time round. Like milk, bread, or indeed tins of beans. Generally speaking, retailers hate it when people remember what they paid for something the last time round. (It means that you'll notice their price increases.) Which is why they like to bounce prices up and down, stick things on BOGOF, multibuy etc etc in order to wipe out your 'price memory'.

The Irish "cheap" brand used to be KVI :) Until TESCO bought the supermarket chain and changed it ofcourse :D

The price changes really do my head in. Most things I buy seem to be a different price every week (usually up!).
