    What's the spare like?
Is it worth swapping that on with a new tyre if it has any tread on it?

the spare one is torn and can't be repaired ..

... then don't forget to make sure you move the best of the current tyres into the boot :)

Also, if the three tyres are good, retain them as spares or sell on ebay. Don't give the fitter the benefit of charging for good tyres he'll be able to sell on.

out of the four on at the moment one is a continental and the other three are cheap brands. the one in the boot is the torn one - so the new Yokohama one that I am purchasing will def. go in the boot .. I think that's okay?

    Sounds a good plan.
Then when you next wear out two on the car, put the spare on with another new Yoko, and put the best of the worn pair in the boot as the spare.

sorry I misread your post, thought you were putting the Yoko on the car.

I'm not so sure I'd put the new tyre in the boot to be honest -- it might sit in there for years like the one in my Mitsubishi has! If a tyre is to be wasted make it an old, crappy one.
  • Good brand tyres for a car like this would be very reasonably priced.

Seeing as the previous owner has put any old mismatched tat rubber on doesn't bode well for other maintenance issues, if 'twer my car i'd want someone competent to service the car and have a thorough inspection of everything that matters.
