I get you now..........something like this site.

These sites always get mine wrong. I'm with Zen who are based in Sheffield. These kind of sites always put me there when I'm way down south (Bucks/Berks border).

So, if you were banned in this way, you could only access a forum by using another network. ie I'm on an apple wireless network, if I was banned, I'd have to buy a Linksy's wireless networking kit (for instance) which would show me as a different identity.

You wouldn't have to change any hardware on your network to get around an IP address ban. You just use a proxy. There are many of these around.

I should point out that although it's true that an IP address won't give away your exact location when you're at home using your PC, it might be a different matter at work. When I'm at work I have a fixed IP address owned by the organisation, which would probably allow outsiders to figure out which building I'm in if they were keen.

according to that one, I'm in the Netherlands, which could explain why my BB is running like a dog.

I've seen a few cases recently of UK ISPs routing their traffic through european servers. This may be what you're seeing.

I think moderators and admin can ban IP addresses. Ie if someone is abusive on this forum, the mods can ban their IP addy and the network they use to access the internet.

So, if you were banned in this way, you could only access a forum by using another network. ie I'm on an apple wireless network, if I was banned, I'd have to buy a Linksy's wireless networking kit (for instance) which would show me as a different identity.

Sorry if this reads dodgy, but I'm sure someone will get what I mean :o

Actually this wouldn't work at all. Your wireless network is internal to your house and uses a separate range of IP addresses to the outside world. The only way to change your IP address is to either
    (a) ask your ISP to do it, if you have static IP or
    (b) log out of your broadband for a good hour or so and then log in again; even this may well not do it.

Having tried a couple of searches on those sites, I think the answer is no, they can't trace you within 100 miles or more, or sometimes
    ... actually we haven't a clue.
