No. Your IP address will give some very basic information about where you are (i.e. it might have "london-adsl" or something in the resolved hostname), but only your ISP can link your public IP address to your home. (Plus, for most people the IP address changes regularly anyway)

And that information is subject to normal privacy; i.e. the police could request it, but that's about it.

It is correct that the forum admins, and possibly moderators etc can see your IP address but as mentioned above all they will be able to do with it is trace your ISP.

Your IP address is also passed in various other ways, e-mails, forms filled in, websites visited etc so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • As a moderator elsewhere I can see the ip address of posters. And as already stated they tell me very little apart from your ISP.

it doesn't seem to be working atm, usually gives a map of your isp's registered address etc.. (which is the most info you can glean from most ip addresses).

It makes a guess about where you are (not terribly accurate guess in my case). However, the technology is obviously good enough to allow personalisation of 'meet women in your area' type adverts and get the city right.

It worked for me earlier, and gave a map of my local area showing where I connect to the internet as well as my ip address. It got the city almost correct.

All I'm getting is a list of search categories going to affiliated lists of results.

  • I think moderators and admin can ban IP addresses. Ie if someone is abusive on this forum, the mods can ban their IP addy and the network they use to access the internet.

So, if you were banned in this way, you could only access a forum by using another network. ie I'm on an apple wireless network, if I was banned, I'd have to buy a Linksy's wireless networking kit (for instance) which would show me as a different identity.

Sorry if this reads dodgy, but I'm sure someone will get what I mean :o
