I applied in the branch for the Co-op cashminder recently, throughout the process I said cashminder and basic bank account. They did not say they would try me for a current account first (which they did).

(I used a passport as I.D.) I just got a copy of my credit report and co-op did 3 credit searches on me for the cashminder:

    1 x current account
    1 x identification
    1 x enquiry

    Did you get the account?
I got rejected a couple of weeks ago for it.
Not got any CCJ's, on no DMP or IVA and am not a bankrupt.

Think I'm going to try Barclays Cash Card next.

  • I'm in a right pickle now...

I'm in the process of applying for an IVA with my wife. It seems between us we have managed to run up some form of debt with just about every financial institution out there! We owe HSBC, Natwest, Barclays & Halifax. I had set up a basic bank account with the Co-op, but because my employer forgot to transfer my wwages to the new account we ended up with a load of DDs being rejected, and co-op shut me down again. Have been to see Yorkshire Bank today, and they've referred us to head office but I'm not holding my breath. Can't got to Lloyds because they own halifax and could legally snatch any money in the account to pay off the debt. So that just leaves Santander, and I'm not hopeful about that either. They were always last choice because they don't provide a debit card, so I wouldn't be able to pay things online or over the phone. Any ideas?

I believe YBS don't offer a debit card any more with the cash transactor account.

    What about Nationwide?

They offer a VISA debit card on their basic account:

You will need to take ID into branch and apply via Branch or Post.

    Good luck! :o

You'll get a santander basic account no problems at all, apply in branch. And after 6 months they will upgrade it to a full account with a debit card.

I'd probably start searching the lesser banks, it was the poster who was anxious for a debit card. If you offer him something else, you should at least point out the lack of such a facility, specially when YB has such a limited coverage. Perhaps the Nationwide is the answer, though I'm not a fan...
  • My daughter lost her Halifax debit card back in September of last year and I reported it immediately when she realised it was missing. The bank advised that card was used at a petrol station and nightclub bar! Due to these reasons Halifax would not renew her card. They did advise us to report it to the police, who would be able to request CCTV footage, which could help them apprehend the criminals.

I reported it to the police that same day and was given a crime reference number and told they would deal with it. I heard nothing back and called 2 weeks later, only to be told by the police that although they accepted the crime and gave me a crime ref no., they could do nothing further unless the Halifax specifically requested it.
I then contacted the Halifax again – who informed me that as the sums used were of a small amount, they would not be pursuing it. They still refused to re-open the account or allow my daughter to have a new account. Since the Halifax would not re-open her account, we applied for an account with Santander.
They accepted her application and send a card would be sent out in 5-7 days. We received the pin and the card arrived on a few days later. We tried to deposit cash into a cash point machine, but the card wouldn’t allow access to the account.
We then received a letter from Santander, advising that the account had been reviewed after we left the branch and the decision to offer an account had been withdrawn. No firm reason was given.
I wrote a letter of complaint to Santander, together with an explanation as to why I think the account offer had been withdrawn – namely the issue I mentioned above with her lost Halifax card. Santander have advised that that as Halifax has raised a CIFAS indicator flag against her name, this is preventing them from allowing her to have an account – they went on to say that no other bank would allow her to have an account until this is removed and that this record would be against her name for 5-6 years!
She is leaving school this year and needs a bank account for college - how can this be allowed to happen to a child. What can I do to resolve this. I have written to Halifax again to urge them to reconsider or give me some options and more importantly to remove the CIFAS indicator from her records as she has done nothing wrong. How can the banks be allowed to get away with this? We did everything right and reported it to the police and have been let down by both the bank and the police. Any advise as to what else we can we do?
How can she get a bank account?

I'd start by making a formal complaint to the Halifax about their refusal to refer the matter to the police. I'd then look at the CIFAS complaints procedure detailed here.
