  • Hi there

OK the info on basic accounts is a great help thank you. My husband is starting work in Edinburgh next week :j, all rather short notice, and this means we need an account for his salary over there as we live in RO Ireland.

So knowing that all we need is a basic one, nothing flash as thats what our account here does, having looked at how to apply seems we need proof of address. This is something we will struggle with in the immediate short term as:
1 He is renting a room
2 He will have co car & phone etc
3 We only found out Thursday its all going ahead

So do you know if any of the banks will accept something else as proof of ID, he has UK passport/license. We have his contract of employment and all out bills and banks here.

Thanks for any advice you can give us. :T

To cut a long story short, me and my husband maybe going with Payplan as of tomorrow and I am thinking of opening a new bank account just for the direct debits to come out of.
Iam self employed doing Ebay and wondered if I would still be accepted for a basic bank account. I only bring in about £500 to £800 a month . Will they want to see my accounts , and if so, for how many years.
I was also thinking of getting a pre-paid credit card and wondered which one is the best.
    Thanks everybody

    Hi Binnie.
Opening a basic bank account doesn't require any past years statements etc, you may just need 1 or 2 forms of ID. I have been with Halifax Easycash for 2 years now and think it's excellent, would highly recommend.
With regards to the pre-paid credit card, I also have one with Virgin who I would recommend, the card looks nice (aesthetic i know!). You can have it as a pay as you go or pay monthly card, they cost 9.95 to purchase as a one off, then depending what tariff you choose, so much a month. You can find more on the virgin prepay credit card and available tariffs by visiting link below:

Hope this helps and good luck :)

    Hi all,
I've managed to open a basic account with barclays bank. I did it online and today I received the paperwork to sign, except for one thing was missing and that was the paperwork for my signature for the card specimen.
I called in at my local branch and took my passport. The lady there gave me a paper to sign and rung another branch to open the account for me. So now I have my new sort code and account number and even a £100 overdraft which I didn't ask for.
Just waiting for my debit card to come and then I can set internet banking up.
    Thanks for all your replies.

It sounds as though you don't have the basic account, there are no overdrafts with basic accounts and I don't believe you can apply online for one.

Ah well, I've got one anyway :T
I didn't even need to put any money into it if I didn't want to.
