Hi I applied for a natwest step account on line, I got a letter saying sorry you don't meet our criteria , a few days later I got all thier bumf, the day later I got welcome to your new step account bla de blar cards and pins will follow day after two statements one saying account open the other account closed seems like no one at natwest knows what they are doing, think I'll stay as I am, certainly wouldn't trust them with my money.

    Sounds similar to my story!!

I have however, opened an account (Ultimate Rewards) with Bank of Scotland. They did a credit check (obviously something was amiss as the manager got on the phone to whom ever), but I got accepted with a £100 overdraft-which will not be increased to the £300 maximum for the account - with fees of £12.50 per month!! I am now changing the account the the Rewards Account, whereby I will not pay any fees, but will not have the overdraft-but will still get the 'Rewards'!!

Having read a few postings on this forum and my own experience-it may pay for people with bad credit to try and open an account which one has to pay a monthly subscription for and after a couple of months change to another account within the same bank for one that does not charge??

The senior staff/managers can overwrite the computer application - when it does the 'credit check', and especialy as they are on commisions for getting people to open fee paying accounts!!

Just make sure that you pay in the required monthly deposits and work the account properly for about 6 months before changing over to a fee free account!!

don't know where you are getting that staff can override a descision as that is im affraid to be so harse but it is nonsense.

just because its an urca doesnt mean they would do this to get the sale im sure it was reffered for further checks.

Then the manager had to phone the underwriters to go through further checks.

regardless of which of the 3 current accounts you apply for its the same credit score required .

Currently got a Classic Plus account at Lloyds, noticed this article and the Vantage account looks fantastic, are there any catches before I sign up? Almost seems a bit good to be true, as long as you keep it within the limits they set on there!

    Cheers

I can't tell whether my account is open or not, still not recieved cards or pins, surely getting the account number and sort code should mean it's open, good thing I didn't set up my money going in

Thankfully, won't be needing a different bank account. Finally got through to the right department at Santander and they have agreed to a monthly reduction of my overdraft facility. Phew! I was probably worrying over nothing.

Thanks to all who took an interest :).

Thanks for the thread. I recently moved from NatWaste to the Cooperative Bank for my main account (never going back), but recently I've run into problems with the provided Visa Electron card. I'm going to research some others banks for additional accounts.

Same here. When I opened the account I was told it was a Visa Debit card as they had now ditched the Electron cards. What a lie that was and had I known it wasnt true I would have stayed with my previous bank.

It does not say its an Electron card anywhere on the card or any of the paperwork I've received but it definately is and I've run into numerous problems trying to use it especially in Tesco.

When you apply over the phone with the Co-op for their Cashminder account and they ask "why?" say "because it is the one I want." If they ask further questions continually demand they accept your application for your desired account.QUOTE]

I had the same problem with the call centre so I visited a branch, but still encountered the same sales pitch. I was so fed up I ended up saying "I would be more than happy to have a standard bank account but due to a poor credit rating you won't allow me to have one". Never seen someone so shocked in all my life, but they duly sorted out my application with no more sales talk :)

Have you heard anything from Natwest about this?. This is what happened to me
I have had shocking service from these this weekend
I opened a step account got a txt saying welcome to Natwest card on the way also got a letter the Next day saying " your application has been successful, we are delighted to welcome you to Natwest as a step current account holder your card and pin are on the way"

Was impressed with the speedy service till Friday when I rang to find out where my new debit card was was told the account had been closed at branch level and I had to go in to the Branch to reopen the account as it must have been a mistake. Off I went on Saturday morning to the Branch was seen pretty quick, Woman I spoke to was very dismissive basically saying some rubbish that even once the welcome letter and txt have been sent out they do further checks !!!!!! and I must have some level of fraud against me she basically called me a fraudster I was/am furious so I rang back the call center and the guy I spoke to said there was a note for me to ring this number if I wanted to discuss it of course they are only open mon-fri 9 till 5. He did also say the reason for the account closed on his screen said "account conduct" !!!!!! when I hadnt even got chance to get any cash in the account
surely any checks would have been BEFORE an account was opened, I have never heard of more checks been done after a account successfully being opened. I have Never had a letter or anything saying I didnt meet their criteria

  • Ok So I finally got to ring the other number Natwest CS gave me on saturday morning the guy I spoke to said the Step account had been closed in ERROR!!! and to go back to branch and they can sort it all out for me, so off I went yesterday morning only to be able to make an appointment for this morning. Turned up for appointment this morning was with the Accounts Manager he was very apologetic (was very impressed with his professional manner) walked out an hour later with a full current account very happy at the mo
He did say it was all open he has never heard in 20 yrs working for Natwest of anyone opening an account being sucessful then it closed again same day, I have my new account number and was told it takes 24-48hrs to activate account so all is good (hopefully) x
