  • I definitely wouldn't send that letter! It comes across as very patronising and may just encourage them to make even more noise. I would go and actually speak to them, explain the problem, may be even get them to put the music on and come upstairs to your flat so they can hear it for themselves.

The letter you have written is only going to get their backs up (in my opinion anyway!)

I thought it was firm but fair but I suppose it could be a bit condescending. I have already spoken to them about the issue but it just doesn't sink in that they are causing a problem. I thought a letter would at least make them think about what they are doing. I don't want to cause aggravation with them but on the other hand they couldn't give a monkey's if they are causing me aggravation so why should I be worried about their poor feelings. If they want to make more noise as a way of retaliating then surely they are playing right into my hands?

Letter is far too emotional. Personally I wouldn't put in more than one 'appeal to emotion' and I would apart fomr that stick to facts when describing the disturbance (work night, late etc). Plus what you do with your music is irrelevant, this is about them.

This is all you need to say.

Dear Tenants of Flat x, xxxxxxxxxx Lane
I was disturbed last night by a heavy bass coming from your flat until the early hours of the morning. This was a Monday night . You may not have realised how loud the music was.

Living in a block of flats means we all have to be a bit conscious of any noise we are creating .

I'm happy to discuss the problem with you, and invite you into my flat so you can hear how much the noise from your flat carries.

If you don't wish to discuss this with me, and the unacceptable levels of noise continues I will seek advice about how this situation can be resolved..

    Yours sincerley

make your council earn their keep & put this problem squarely at their feet - particularly if its a tenant of theirs! Given constant moaning by you and other residents eventually the council will take appropriate action of either theatening or actually evicting this idiot family.

I wouldnt send them that letter - they will just laugh in your face & call you a snob plus potentially have grounds to counter any grievance you might file with the council, because they felt bullied by you. Councils like it when they can put it in the category of "6 of 1, half a dozen of the other" - that way they dont have to take sides or do anything. Most important thing is keep a diary - suggest you think back over past 6 months & try to come up with one to date, otherwise they will make you wait months before taking action.

A friend of mine was having problems with neighbours, so thought he would have a word with them. He saw them arriving home when he was doing some DIY, so he went round while carrying a hammer - he just forgot he was carrying it. The problem seemed to sort itself out!!
  • I wouldn't send a letter without going round and talking to them in the light of day. Speaking to my neighbours at 4am when they were enjoying a drunken party had no effect. They actually told me to stop bothering them and phone the police if I was so upset about it! I did end up calling the police on 2 occasions, and although that put a stop to each incident it didn't stop the long term problem. However, a brief conversation in the daytime has more or less sorted it out. They aren't noisy on a regular basis now, and when they plan on having a party they let me know in advance.

Of course if that doesn't work then getting the council involved would probably be the next step. Keep a noise diary, and you can phone the police on them without it becoming a formal dispute. Best of luck sorting it out.
