Cancelling Sky+

Sorry if this is already on here.

I'm taking a look at the finances and realised we could do without the £30 a month for Sky+, so rang up to cancel so I would just receive the freeview channels through my sky+ box.

I was told that in order to keep the recording and playback facilities I would still need to pay £10 a month!! I questioned that it wasn't the 'Anytime' facilities but they said not.

I don't know if it's just me but I thought this would be free!

Any help grateful.

    That's correct.

The recording and playback functions are part of the service Sky provide you. If you don't subscribe to Sky, you lose these facilities on the Sky+ box, unless you pay them £10 per month.

If you want to be able to record, you'd be better off getting a decent PVR box...

You are not paying £30 a month for Sky+, you're paying £30 a month for your particular Sky package, which comes with Sky+included.
Cancelling your sub does not give you any Freeview channels (which are terrestial-based), it gives you the Freesat From Sky channels-similar but not identical.
If you want to record, then you'll be better off getting a proper Freesat PVR (such as the Humax Foxsat HDR), but this again has a slightly different channel line-up, so check first if you have particular requirements.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Have lowered it to the £10 a month option whilst I get something better in place. Cheers for the help!

Just bear in mind, that the moment you cancel the Sky+ facility, it means you can't watch anything that has already been recorded. So make sure you watch everything before cancelling...

  • Yes, was just about to say what Meepster said - your recordings DO go away! I had recorded lots of films on my Sky+ box and didn't realise this until it had already been cancelled. They still appear, they just pop up an error when you try and play them back. We are looking at Freeview DVRs now - they can be reasonable, under £100, and given our Sky bill was £42 a month it's not bad at all.

Calling all football fans. I have just cancelled my Sky Sports package as it now takes 31 days to cancel, this will allow you to still watch all of the remaining games but saving you about £40 in 2 months.

    Every little helps :)

Or just watch them streaming online, then you can watch any match you want, and save yourself a fortune :D

Yes watch the illegal streams and if watching them with p2p software then you too are guilty of stealing pay TV and subject to prosecution as such.

No p2p software involved. Who exactly is going to prosecute me? And for what?

I've downloaded thousands of films and music albums over the years and the police still hasn't came knocking! Paying for entertainment is so 90's.
