It's good to hear that the recipe you tried came out well in absolute terms, at least. But, if you recall the taste of the McVities Tunis Cake, how close did this particular recipe come to that, would you say?

Thanks so much for this!
I had Tunis Cake every year when I was a kid up until my early teens and then they became less popular and nowhere sold them - I'm now 30yrs old and have been trying to find a bloody tunis cake every year for the last 10years!!!
My wife actually thought I'd imagined them as everyone we asked had never heard of them
I'm off to Tesco's to buy me some Tunis action
cheers

I see from Tesco's website that they have them for £4.99 on the Xmas cakes shelf. Should I give it a second try, or give it a miss after my bitter disappointment 2 years ago?
I guess it depends on whether you're looking for something as good as the McVities Tunis Cake or any old, second rate cake which someone decides to call 'Tunis'!0 -
Might make one of these for DH's birthday in April. He loves chocolate. Never heard of them before.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

I bought one in Tesco today for £4.99, not as good as the original, but my old Gran appreciates it. She used to get hers from the milkman. I may make one too.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

I'm sure it's a better bet than trying the Tesco Tunis cake. Curiosity got the better of me and I bought one today, in case they'd improved the recipe since two years ago. They haven't! The chocolate is nothing special but passable. The sponge cake is bland and tasteless, which is hardly surprising when you look at all the chemicals listed in the list of ingredients. AVOID.0 -

This morning I saw Tunis cake in Sainsburys, also £4.99
Not sure if the flavour will live up to the old McVities cake, but might be worth a try?0 -
I was brought up on Tunis Cakes at Christmas too, and I've been buying Tesco's version each year in the vain hope that they could recreate the McVities taste, but they fail each year. (Managed to track one down in Newbury, and this year's disappoints too, though it does seem slightly larger!). The chocolate Tesco's uses is bland, as is the sponge. From my memory, the McVities was a quality tasting madeira sponge, and the tasty thick chocolate was quite smooth to cut - this year's splits all over the place.
My parents couldn't get a Tunis cake last year, and are holding out hope that they'll receive one in their online shopping order (assuming the store will liaise nicely with the Tesco Direct dept!)
I remember the marzipan decorations in the middle seemed a drier texture, not glossy or slimy, but the pattern around the edge of the cake I remember as being piped pink icing, then an inner ring of piped yellow icing (both with lines). Does this ring a bell?
BRING BACK MCVITIES' TUNIS CAKE!!
