I would chuck it at the credit card for now cause in the worst case in scenario you could pay for that insurance on the credit card and still be in a slightly better position as you would have saved 2 months interest on the credit card (I am by no means suggesting that paying on the cc should be a solution to everything and certainly not encouraging dependency on cc, just trying to suggest ideas that might save you money)

Thanks. I wonder if it is a bit early to check car insurance renewal prices on comparison sites? This would give me an idea of what I am likely to pay.

My main annoyance just now is my mobile phone/internet bill.

ps. just logged onto my savings account for first time in ages... have £458.78 @ 0.25%
Debt now £48,000 in the form of a mortgage :o

You may as well have asked me what the winning euromillion numbers are this friday! I don't have a clue, as I don't drive, sorry!

Based on an absolutely wild guess, I would say that the sites should give you a very rough indication!

What I can say with certainty though is that when you do come to renewing it, don't forget to use a cashback site! ;)

I have been reading about QUIDCO and will certainly see if I can get some cashback. I guess London and cars do not mix all that well.

Quidco is good but I have heard topcashback is really good as well. This (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cashback-websites) is a pretty good guide to cashback. [I might take a small cut for my efforts :D]

Indeed London and cars don't mix all that well but more importantly debt/brokeness and driving lessons don't mix at all! :o

Thanks for that. Maybe now that you are debt free you can get some lessons? I was lucky that my parents paid for mine when I was 17- and that I passed first time. :D

Aye, that's the plan but first I must SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! I have no pressing need to be driving in the near future so I am initially aiming to have the following saving pots set up:

    1. A rainy fund (about 3-6 months GROSS salary, setting myself a stiff target to start with),
    2. A house deposit and moving fund
    3. A random savings fund

The above are in addition to the usual holiday funds etc.

I guess I will try to set up a driving fund simultaneously but I will be lying if I said it's going to be a priority! :o

  • Thanks. My savings are at 0.5% I think. I could pay off some of the card and just take my car insurance over 12 months rather than using my savings to pay it in full. I am running through all sort of options in my head and doing all sorts of calculations.

Could you not move your credit card debt to 0% and open a savings account paying 3%?

BTW living at home (I'm 25) isn't too bad. Great benefits especially on saving and paying down debt.
Credit Card Debts: £11,605.95/£16,240.53 - 71% paid off.

£4,634.61 credit card debt remaining. Aim for credit card debt free before
    [STRIKE]October 2011[/STRIKE] December 2012. In debt since 2004.

I have not looked into any other credit cards. I have had this card since I was 18 and had managed to pay it off every month until the split with the ex. I had to settle all sorts of accounts when we gave up the flat.

I am enjoying being back home- just strange being back in the bedroom I left as a teenager.

I plan to save for a few months after the 100 days challenge. This will be my moving out fund. I already have lots of things required for the move stored in my parents garage. Will hopefully save about £2k before moving out.
