380 quid to replace clutch on Honda Jazz?

Mr Clutch said it was the clutch, and my dh had an idea it was too, as we had an old car years ago which made exactly the same noise and it was the clutch then. It just makes a rapid knocking noise when you start off in low gear, and is ok by the time you are up to maybe 3rd gear and driving at 30mph.
clutch plate/cover faults normally involve slipping and clutch bearing faults normally involve noises that vary depending on whether the pedal is up or down.
Can't actually think of a clutch fault that produces knocking noises so maybe a second opinion would be a good idea, I'd be looking towrds exhaust and/or engine/gearbox mounts0 -
We have always sourced parts ourselves and then got them fitted. In an effort to save money. Is it ok to do with other parts then, but not a clutch?
Do you guys never source your own parts?
I do all my own repairs so never been an issue but if I didn't I can see the problems if something goes wrong, and there is disagreement about whether it's a manufacturing fault or a fitting fault.0 -
Maybe I didn't describe it right. It sounds as if something is loose, but only when the car is in low gear building up speed. Doesn't sound like anything to do with the exhaust, and the gears are still lovely and smooth.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

There is also an argument that garages cost a certain amount per hour to run and you either pay that as labour plus a mark-up on parts or as a labour charge which increases to include the money they haven't made on the parts.0

So we would end up paying the same amount either way? So our best bet is to start ringing round garages tomorrow to get quotes including part and labour. Will do. Thanks for the advice.
Mind you, think I will get dh to take it to another garage for assessment to make sure it is the clutch bearings.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

It's hard over the web but I'm struggling to think of something in the mechanics of a clutch that could knock but only in certain gears.
I'd get a second opinion0 -

I have, but it's always a calculated risk. The length of time the component should last, what can go wrong if it fails (safety, cost) are all factors. I won't be doing it with my new cam belt. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
The bearings are starting to go on our Honda Jazz 2006. We have been quoted 380 by Mr Clutch to replace it. This includes 250 pounds for labour, but the guy who gave us the quote from his computer, said that it seemed very excessive.
If we source one ourselves and get it fitted independently, what is a reasonable price to pay please?
( pound symbol not working on my keyboard for some reason!)
£80 for the clutch kit (Quentin Hazell) and £100 for the labour.0
