I was told that in the first few weeks of pregnancy, maternal toxins are not passed on to the child so it doesn't really matter much what happened before you got the positive.

If you don't have one already then this is a list of what you can't eat

but i must warn you I'm a bit rubbish when it comes to sticking to 'rules' as I truly believe that a relaxed mum leads to a relaxed baby. All of my friends who followed the rules book to the ltter as so stressed and their babies whinge all the time...

When I get pregnant, I will be sticking to all the rules. I would rather have a slightly whingy baby than one who is ill because I didn't follow all the rules properly as it can happen.

My OH's mum obviously didn't follow all the rules properly because she got Toxoplasmosis during pregnancy and passed it onto him. Normal toxoplasmosis is fine unless you are born with it and he almost lost his eyesight because of it and he still can get a reoccurence and lose his eyesight. (You can get Toxoplasmosis from raw or not cooked enough meat, unwashed fruit and vegetables, cat litter tray..)

Oh my god! Looking at that all my fave food is out! I wouldn't be able to eat Camembert (I only like soft cheese), have coca cola, tea (I LOVE a good cup or 10 of Assam!), coffee, no rare stake... N that isn't even counting alcohol! Good job it's not me... I have come round to the I won't have alcohol way of thinking... Take away my tea I will bite!

Some people follow all the rules and still have babies which are born ill. It could be the guidelines did not exist then. Things vary every year and massively from country to country. I would not judge you for following the advice to the letter and I think it is unfair to judge others who don't. Obviously not smokoing, not drinking to excess, having a good diet, exercise etc are all very important, but so is not getting too caught up on all the detail. Ladies have been having happy, healthy babies for a very long time, which is something you need to remember. I should know, I have 4 of them! I am not saying I was blase, just that I didn't get too worried.

At one point there was advice to not eat peanuts during pregnancy, which has changed. You were allowed a couple of units of alcohol when I had my first 2 kids but not now. You could have up to 6 cups of coffee a day when I was pregnant with my first two also. As I said, they are very healthy and very intelligent, plus some of the happiest most relaxed kids you could meet. To me when there are so many guidlines in place sometimes we loose the ability to think for ourselves. I know 30 and 40 year old women who are perfectly capable of running their own businesses but who struggle to make the most basic of decisions when it comes to their kids as they fear doing things 'wrong'.

    Anyway, rant over!

I know - I think it is just something I feel a little passionately about! You have enough concerns as a new Mum, you don't need so many rules in my opinion. Yes, the ones like no smoking, avoidoing cat litter etc are perfectly right, but too much coffee? No peanuts? It all just becomes a bit dictatorial.

I agree as it is already overwhelming dealing with being pregnant. sure things like tuna is a no-no as it contais mercury? thank god i hate tuna.. i like liver but have to avoid that. i do love my tea and sometimes a cup of coffee here and there. tea esp so Jo i know what you mean. lol. even things like green tea have loads of caffeine so where do u really draw the line?i like my diet coke too but will have to try and stop that as its not good anyway. i agree megan sometimes a woman ends up getting way too stressed, but i also see your point olokia. i guess some things in moderation. the gp didnt tell me about alcohol but iguess thats common sense. i spoke to my friend who recently had a baby and she is breast feeding at the mo. she says she has a cheeky drink here and there. She said she was extremely fussy with food but her mum told her off saying you can't avoid everything, as she didnt. :)

when my sis-in law was preg, my brother was terrible. banning her to eat nuts etc.. good lord. at least hubby's chilled out a bit and we eat junk(i mean sweet stuff) together. lol
