Does that mean that the meter should have been programmed to show the export as there is only 5 digits showing

Could it be that the default configuration for this type of meter is to display the total energy i.e. imported plus exported? This would not be a problem for the vast majority of customers but when solar PV is fitted, the meter would need to be reconfigured to display both import and export registers.
An option in the tariff software allows export energy to be added and displayed to the forward total (or Import) register. In all cases, the export and import registers are physically maintained separately.
Your total imported and exported registers can still be read by a meter reader with an optical comms port reader, as this data is stored in non volatile read only memory.
The optical port is used for examining and/or changing the contents of meter memory, and programming the meter serial number, etc. It may also be used for on-site meter reading. In order to carry out these functions, a PC or handheld unit with appropriate software must be connected to the optical port using a standard Flag optical probe.

Unfortunatley they install to the fuse box & probably won't take responsibilty for the fact the meter isn't working correctly.

    .

My view is that they should have picked this up during the pre-installation survey.

I've just been on to the electric supplier today to make sure that whoever comes out understands what is happening. When I booked the appointment last week, (soonest they can come out is 10th May) I just thought we had a faulty meter, but now know that its not just as straight forward as that, and asked them to make a note of what is happening.
Anyway, as I was talking to rep he told me that they have pages of all the notes made re phone calls that I have made since we got the panels in, and querying my electricity costs.

Now just waiting for the installers to get back to me.

Who should have done this - presumably the electric suppliers?

Yes I would have thought so, when you applied for the FIT payments although it seems to vary depending on who your supplier is and which National Grid DNO area you live in. Many different types of meters have been installed over the years and suppliers do not all operate the same policies e.g. some suppliers will simply add together day and night rate meter readings and others will insist that the meter is changed when a customer switches from a dual rate tariff to a single rate tariff. I'm guessing that with the recent introduction of FIT payments and with 'smart meters' supposedly on the horizon, the situation is presumably similar with the different suppliers doing things their own way.

When I was talking to suppliers today, I realised they have a record of which meter we have. Just read the contract for FiT payments, and it would have taken 6-8 months to get an export meter fitted!!!!

    Update

Installers have rung, and couldn't be more helpful - they haven't come across this before, so are now going to put it on pre installation survey. The meter is capable of going both ways. Installers say to come back to them if I need any help re getting sorted with electric suppliers - so just have to wait until 10th May to get it sorted.

    Another blazing day today
read my mains meter last night 10.30 am 93233 read it again this morning at 8 am 93236
from 8 am to 12 noon 93240 I've added the dishwasher on to useage but we have produced 7KW of electric in that time.

On the plus side, so far this month we have produced 425 KW of electric, and there are still 3 days to go to the end of the month.
Getting Solar Panels has been a good move for me - my pension pot would probably have been swallowed up by now.

.....and even had a fan heater running - just so we wouldn't be getting charged for electricity we are producing.
My PV system was pumping out 3kw earlier today, and I had to unfortunately plug a 2kw heater in, blowing hot air into the garden, just to stop the meter whizzing up units!
Wasting power like this does not sit easy with me, but on recent similar days the panels have produced about 18 - 20kwh's in the day, so these sunny days are going to result in a big electric bill.

Been onto Scottish Power, and tried to explain the problem, and am sure that they don't believe me, but have agreed to change the meter anyway.
First fitting date - 20th May!!
I'm also awaiting a further call from Scottish Power technical to discuss reimbursement.
