susan946 - I had acupuncture from the local NHS physio when I had a slipped disc, it was the only time I could sleep! Shame the sessions were only about 20 min long really. Once the acupuncture had made a difference, I went to back stability classes - basically, there was a circuit with core strength/balance challenges. The idea was to build the muscles around the middle, it really worked and now, when ever I pick something up (especially if I'm lifting and twisting), I pull my pelvic floor muscles up - this engages the other core muscles and means there is less stress on my back. I never want to have that pain again so I'll always do little things that reduce the risk - Greenbees list is excellent, and much more detailed than any medic would give.
On a different theme, has any one seen a programme called "extreme Couponning"? It's an American programme on 272/Realtime about people who's grocery shopping bill goes from $600+ down to below $5 by using loads of coupons, one got his down from nearly $6000 to below $250 - mind you, the 2 garages he's got are chocker block of stuff he's bought, apparently, he won't need to buy deoderant for about 100 years! It was amazing, but I don't think you'll find me going through the newspaper recycling containers at the tip looking for coupons!

Morning all, I need your good vibes at 1pm today please, as I have an interview with my old employers for a job in the the other Scottish big city today to start after this contract ends! I LOVED working there and really love their stuff. I think I'll be fine at the interview, I know the lady really well and have done my prep but what I need are positive vibes that she will offer me sufficient money to 'live the life' and not just exist on so that I can take it.

Thanks and hope those in pain feel better today X

    Morning my Lovelies

Got my cuppa in the garden this morning - the heat in the sun already is powerful. It's funny but the heat in the sun warms you in a way that warm clothes and central heating never does. Lovely!!!

........... and the garden smells all damp and steamy after the rain (Although I did relocate abut 20 snails:eek:)

Gotta laugh about the hanging baskets - DS1 and I must have made our eight big ones for less than a fiver (including the compost) - amazing what you can do when you are creative about it.

Had a great day identifying some big and some small goals yesterday in the 7 areas of my life. Today will be spent taking each in turn and creating a baby-steps list of the daily activities needed to get there.

Fairly sobering / exciting to look at a huge sheet of paper with 24 monthly boxes on it and start thing about - "what memories do I want to create for the boys in the next couple of years/ what goals do I desire for us as a family?"

Some suprising things came to the fore - including that " I open the door to my gorgeous welcomming home that we own free and clear"

I guess that providing DS's with a bedrock of financial security is still really important to me .........................

................. as for achieveing that in 2 years - no idea HOW I can do it, but I do know that it CAN be done. To kick his iff I have transferred £4.18 to the "Freedom Fund" (the old account named Mortage) - which brings my payments to a whole £100 this month:j. Now that was completely painless and I only need to do it 1255 times more to achieve the goal:D

Time to get my bahookie boogieing :rotfl:

    Have a DFW day

    Morning Matrix

Thank you so much for all the advice re the back pain. It's such a bu**er. Roll on Friday and hopefully the consultant will come up with a way forward. So many of you replied and so many ideas.

So much of what you've suggested I know helps. I didn't know about the sugar, Greenbee, but as hubby is diabetic we eat very little but I will be even more vigilant for myself. At the end of last week and on Saturday I knew I just had to rest. Any attempt at exercise - and I did go out on Saturday morning in an attempt to try to 'walk it off' - just made it worse. My problem isn't muscular, it's pressure on the nerves giving pain down my leg. I tend to speak of it as back pain because it originates from the arthritic distortions in my spine but the pain goes down mainly my left leg. I also have a degree of stenosis - narrowing of the neural canal and that limits the blood flow to the nerves and gives pain in both legs. It's all a bit of a mess. The surgeon calls it a 'degenerate spine'. Things are a bit easier now so I shall pick up up the activity level and get a bit of exercise today.

Eager Elephant Thank you for your kind offer. I shall pm you later.

Tried the Alexander Technique. I was put off by the teacher. I went to a Summer School day where she taught and started off by telling us that if everyone practise AT nobody would need joint replacements. I know I had had my hip 'done' by then, so maybe I took it a bit personally, but things are not that simple. Couldn't leave that unchallenged, could I, and she did back down, but I was put off by such narrow thinking. Also I thought there was a tacit 'if you have joint pain it's your fault' in there.

Still tried some 1:1 but found the treatment painful and stopped. I did take away some useful ideas - such as spending some time in the semi-supine position (lying in your back with your knees up) for 20 minutes a day - only helps if you can get down and up from the floor without too much pain - and thinking before you move. I think I had the wrong teacher but there are not many in this area and the costs mount all the time.

Yesterday morning it was still very uncomfortable so I decided to have a quiet morning. After lunch my neighbour called round to ask whether I would like to go to a harp recital in the afternoon. I was a bit unsure about whether I would be able to sit still, but I still said yes. Had the most wonderful afternoon. The chair was comfortable - padded and a good shape. The harpist was fantastic. Gave a fascinating history of the harp, sang to a couple of pieces with a beautiful pure voice, had a wonderful calm, gentle speaking voice and a delightful sense of humour. We had tea and biccies in the interval, the sun shone and all in all it was the most wonderful afternoon - all the more so because it was unexpected. My neighbour is a Quaker and the concert was arranged by the Friends and was held at the historic Meeting House in Jordans - a fascinating grade 1 listed building - that added to the pleasure of the afternoon. William Penn (of Pennsylvania fame) and both of his wives are buried there.

So that was a couple of hours heart singing for me yesterday.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Sue
