Looking for a cheap supermini?

Arnold Clark are now selling brand new Kia Picanto 1.0 Spice for the £5995 I paid for a '1' a month ago - obviously because the new model is imminent. Air con, [strike]central locking[/strike], etc.
AFAIK you can still get the £500 deposit contribution via Kia Access finance too, making it a bit of a bargain.

I have seen a few pictures of the new Picanto.
To convince me to buy the old shape with the new one coming they would have to sell the old one for £2500.
The new one is that much nicer.
Not forgetting that the old ones will be more expensive to run as they don't qualify for free road tax, whereas some of the new ones do.
And the depreciation that you will suffer on these run out models will be huge.
Something to remember if you have bought it on a PCP, with a residual payment, not read one of these agreements for over a decade, but what if the GFV is £2000, but the car has a value of £1500?
However if you are going to drive it into the ground and you qualify for disabled roadtax then obviously my concerns are unimportant.
But the new Kias are worth waiting for and crucially in a different league to the older ones, the Picanto was a cheap set of wheels 5 years ago, now it is just plain old fashioned.
It may work out cheaper over the term of ownership to buy one of the Fiat 500's that GlynHopkin are selling for under £10k, in three years it will probably still be worth £6/7k
In three years one of these Picantos will be worth about £2/3k being generous, I think nearer £2k.
Not saying the Picanto is a bad deal Kilty, just that sometimes price isn't the only thing to consider when buying new or nearly new.
Remember the New Mini when for the first 5 years of production? They hardly lost any money, bloke at work bought a Cooper S at the same time as another bloke bought a Fiesta Zetec S, not much price difference when new, both nice sporty small cars, both faultlessly reliable.
At trade-in time three years later the Mini was worth double what the Fiesta was worth!!0 -
Depreciation doesn't worry me in the slightest little bit
If it's worth less than the GFV at 36 months the call goes like this
Kilty: "Hi, Santander?"
Santander: "Yes..."
Kilty: "Your car is waiting for you outside my house"
Santander: "Oh f*ck"
I agree that the new Picanto (and Rio too) looks awesome though. 1.0 Turbo!}
Do remember that my car will have four years warranty remaining at 3 years old with low mileage and full dealer service history, though. If it's only worth £2000 then someone's getting a bargain.

True, the warranty is a real sales winner.
And if the GFV is irrelevant as you can just hand it back then it makes it an excellent deal to have one on a PCP like you have done, three years fixed price motoring, can't complain.
I am looking seriously at the new Rio for the wife with the 3 cylinder diesel, fre roadtax, free congestion charge, 100 right down in first year, offset against your corporation tax.
The fact that it has a 7 yr warranty and also looks nice are just other good points.
All the other cars I have looked at are also less than 100g/km for co2, so all have the same tax advantages.
But the Rio is the best looking and the rumour is £10k for the entry level diesel, and promises of 85mpg.
Run it in the business for 4 yrs then the eldest can have it as a University car, with three years left on the manufacturers warranty, whats not to like.0
