It is called the INTERNET BANKING PROMISE!

Under the INTERNET BANKING PROMISE you will only be reimbursed/refunded (or what other synonym you care to use) if you are using a supported operating system running a supported browser.

If you don't have a supported operating system running a supported browser, the INTERNET BANKING PROMISE does NOT apply and you will not be reimbursed/refunded.

No browser running under Linux is covered by the INTERNET BANKING PROMISE because no Linux Browser is supported by Nationwide.

I see .. .. so its nothing whatsoever to do with Trusteer Rapport Software

    - just. It is the case that your bank does not want business from anyone using Linux / browser / whatever
    - I'm guilty of not noticing you changed the thread title twice

Did you change the thread title or did a mod ' graft ' your thread onto Katykat's April 2011 post ?

My take on this - Nationwide is a building society , why do they call it Internet Banking ?
Also since they are a mutual the most I can add is that Rapport and Internet use are mutually exclusive.

To be fair, it does seem to do its job based on the MRG tests (http://malwareresearchgroup.com/), but overall the negative effect on system performance is far too great for it to be recommended IMO.

Anyone security conscious would be better to ensure they don't get infected in the first place, rather than constantly treating their computer as though it is already.

It doesn't make sense to me to take resources away from prevention, and focus so much on palliation. Then again that's how many countries run their health policy...
  • Here is the evidence you require...

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/internetbanking/helpandsupport/browserhelp.htm

Just click on the SUPPORT tab.

You will note that it specifically excludes linux browsers, It seems unsure whether it supports Google Chrome or not. IE9 is not listed as a supported browser, athough it is not specifically excluded either. Beta browsers are specifically excluded from their support.

BROWSER NOT SUPPORTED = NO BANKING PROMISE
    What we don't support

    • Any Beta versions of browsers
    • Any browsers running on any Linux distribution (e.g. Konqueror/KDE, Firefox/Ubuntu)
    • Camino, Omniweb or Shiira on Mac OS X
Beta versions of browsers are still in development and we need to ensure they work correctly with our site and systems. Our site may work, however we can't provide you with any technical support and the Internet Banking Promise doesn't apply until the browser is supported.
Support is given on the basis that you don't switch off certain features in the browser settings (e.g. disabling JavaScript) or customise the browser in ways that may affect how it works (for example, adding browser extensions that may cause content not to load or render properly). For tips and advice on browser setups visit our Troubleshooting site.

Thanks for the above which I came across while searching for info on Trusteer Rapport which has been causing me some browser problems. I had no idea IE9 was not supported and included in Nationwide Internet Banking Promise. It never entered my head that this should be so as I just assumed it was more secure to have the most up to date browser. Have now reverted to IE8 as I can't risk not being covered. I imagine an awful lot of people are unaware of this.

    Raine E Day...

I think Nationwide may be hard pressed to decline support for an IE9 as it is now on general release.

Additionally, Nationwide apparently only checks your user agent's string when you log into their website but the user agent string is not definitive in determining which browser and OS you may have.

For instance, enabling compatibility view in IE9 will make your browser look like IE7 as far as Nationwide is concerned. You can also change the user agent string from the F12 menu to make IE9 look like IE8 to Nationwide.
  • The prevalence of banks providing ' virii ' facilitated online banking has more to do with league tables [ the marketing arm of banks, ie .. .. my bank is more secure than other banks ] in the same way that amd is faster than intel or linux is safer than microsoft or carlsberg is nicer than those other largers .. .. .. probably.

The real test for all / any online banking institutions is if they say """ if any customer ever innocently suffers any fraud while using our Internet Banking service, we will refund any money taken from their account """

Its an interesting fact in this case that Nationwide topped last months ' Which ' league table precisely because it does offer to refund any customer ever innocently suffering any fraud while using their Internet Banking service.

Thats down to the refund promise .. .. not the phorm like behaviour of Crapport which is used by many many banks. HSBC has now issued an additional Calculator type number generator that was used by the Co-op and Natwest years ago. A~n~other extra layer of crap in order to move their perceived security reputation up from the middle ground. If those listed below really wanted to move up the league tabe 34 points its easy .. .. guarantee to refund any customer ever innocently suffering any fraud while using their Internet Banking service, and you would be only within a point of each other .. .. probably :D

    1. Nationwide BS 69%
    2. NatWest/RBS 63%
    3. Barclays 62%
    4. The Co-operative Bank 59%
    5. HSBC 58%
    6. Clydesdale Bank 56%
    7. First Direct 54%
    8. Lloyds TSB 54%
    9. Smile 49%
    10. Santander 44%
    11. Halifax 38%
    12. Norwich & Peterborough 35%

Thanks for info - maybe I will reinstall and enable compatibility view.

Here is their response to my query:

    "Thank you for your message.

I am sorry that Internet Explorer 9 is not currently supported with our Service. We are unable to provide a date when this will happen. I apologise for any inconvenience."

    Very non-committal!

What a lot of nonsense. Last Month's Which? survey was to do with measuring on-line security, it had nothing to do with honouring the Internet Banking Promise should on-line security be breached.

When I found out that Nationwide did not support IE9 I sent them a message too. They did, in fact, insist I would still be covered by the Internet Banking Promise despite IE9 not being a supported browser. That is in complete contradiction to what Nationwide state on their website.
