N'wide online banking are recommending to download Trusteer software that they say works alongside current anti virus & firewall to help protect online banking details. Its free and seems a good programme but does anyone know if there are any drawbacks?

It doesn't work with every browser...................0

I logged onto to Nationwide today and found they were recommending this software, so downloaded it; no problems so far.
Just a pity that it does not automatically protect every site. Nationwide's agreement with Rapport must be very new as Nationwide is not listed as one of Rapport's partners within the Rapport software but Nationwide is listed as a partner on the Trusteer website.
It would appear that anyone can download the software (even if your bank in not a partner) and you can set it up to protect up to 100 websites you may use.0 -
Rapport has proved to be a bit of a pain.
WHen I reboot my PC I am met with a barrage of pop-ups from my Comodo Firewall, not only for Rapport, but other software too. It then rund 7 of the programs in isolated mode (incuding Rapport).
I have configured Cmodo to accept Rapport as trusted application but it still isolates it.
Finally gave up and uninstalled Rapport and things are back to normal.0 -
Old post but still valid.
Rapport
There was a post some many weeks ago in this section of the forum, reference Virgin / Kaspersky / Rapport ! - I said at that time "" never in a million years, not Virgin, or HSBC Rapport, not with a barge pole. Why trust anyone ? just because it's your bank doesn't make them experts, it arguably doesn't even make them any more expert than you are, yet they frighten you the customer into putting one more piece of software onto your puter. HSBC login system already requires a specific PIN and a variable password [ changes each time you log in ] and a 3 wrong strikes and your locked out fall back position.
I don't trust any of the words that the Okie Island Trading Company have to say about the validity of Rapport, and certainly not their testing methodology. My understanding is it eats RAM, slows your net experience, has low detection capabilities, high false positives, and any program without a reverse gear [ uninstaller ] should not be allowed on any computer. Your computer is your responsibility, keep it, and a good AV, clean and updated and you won't need this extra burden. There's nothing new about keyloggers they've been around since the days of BB's, [ DOS version of the internet ] I'm not sure if (a) the banks have been scammed into paying money to Rapport, by Rapport or (b) the banks are scamming the customers with Rapport.
- all banks, not just HSBC have a ' variable password ' , Barclays for example have a calculator [ pin sentry - see * below ] version of variable password, so even if Rapport was not on your system and a ' bot ' was sent your keystrokes [ see ** below ] they would not be able to [ see *** below] get into your bank. The banks have been negligent, their product assessment is to say the least, very very pedestrian.
- so Raport does not work, but even if it did it's redundant and rendered useless for the reasons given above !
- going back to my earlier observation ' not with a barge pole ' why the banks missed / disregarded the obvious I've no idea other than they will be able to try use it as one more ' cop out ' for not paying out.
* looks like a calculator into which you put your card, it gives you a one time only, unique, pre-entry, 8 digit code that works for a very [ minutes ] limited time.
** in the case of HSBC the variable code is valid for that unique one very limited time only, any bot collecting the info would find it totally useless seconds later.
*** I just logged onto my HSBC account seconds apart from both IE8 & Chrome and my bank let me in, but demanded a different ' variable password '

I was with the Midland Bank 24 years ago when I was invited to be a member of their beta test team for internet banking, in those 25 years I've never had any problems whatsoever. Midland is of course now HSBC.
I will not be taking up any parties offer to install their software onto my machine. My machine is just that, mine ! Spent a wasted 2 hours trying to help my elderly neighbour connect to her broadband account but it continually rejected username/password combination. Even helpful Orange support couldn't fathom it out.
To cut a long story short, she had installed Rapport which appears to take over "Password Management" and won't allow duplicate passwords ( I know you shouldn't but how many people do?)
Same happened with a friend who's Incredimail Accounts stopped working, but I was wiser this time.
Interestingly, they both opted to change passwords and keep Rapport. Debateable since it instills good practice but this type of behind the scenes manipulation does not sit well with me."It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

This is exactly the sort of person Rapport is aimed at.
It is not aimed at users of this forum and the like who are generally tech and security saavy in the main.
It is aimed at those who despite having been told umpteen times in the press/TV/Radio/Newspapers not to use the same pin, password, memorable name whatever for most/everything STILL do it.
So they have invented a system that MAKES 'em use different passwords- and perhaps they will finally learn the hard way: short of sticking an electrified cattle prod up their.......
Meanwhile the rest of us have to try and avoid the wretched keylogger - which is what Rapport is after all: it logs your passwords.

Dear Mr Varjak,
Thank you for your message.
I am sorry to hear of your difficulties. I confirm that you are covered by the Internet Banking Promise regardless of whether you chose to use the Rapport software.

Nationwide's Internet Banking Promise does not depend on the use of Trusteer Rapport software, but it does depend on using a "supported browser"...
http://www.nationwide.co.uk/internetbanking/onlinesecurity/howwekeepyousafe/ourpromise.htm
Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 9 is NOT a supported browser, nor is any BETA version of any browser. Linux browsers are NOT supported at all, so never log into Nationwide internet banking from a Linux machine!
If you want to check if your configuration is supported, click the SUPPORT tab and scroll to the bottom of this page. It will check your installation and tell you if your installation is supported...
http://www.nationwide.co.uk/internetbanking/helpandsupport/browserhelp.htm
I think Nationwide should have a warning pop-up box telling customers, when they reach the log-in page, whether their installation is supported or not!0 -
Installed Rapport again yesterday. It does consume a lot of RAM and can hog CPU time as well. Also seems to slow down Internet Explorer, though not Google Chrome.
At least it does not interfere with Comodo firewall now; I just hope it is as efficacious as the makers claim it to be.
I just wish some indepenent test laboratory would due an in-depth test of the software.
Strangely, Nationwide is still NOT listed as a trusteer partner on the Trusteer website but over 100 banks/building societies and even Paypal and eBay are partners. So, I can only assume it must be good!?
Apparently, Trusteer has two partner banks that won't guarantee customers' losses if they don't install Rapport.
Sopme people suggest that you should use a bootable Linux CD to do on-line banking but it would seem that Nationwide frowns upon this and will not apparently reimburse those who use Linux for on-line banking.
Even if Rapport is not all what it is cracked up to be, Nationwide would be hard pressed to deny me compensation given that I have taken all their recommended steps to protect my on-line security.0
