Its true - cycling is faster is many cities. In Bristol the average speed in the car can be as low as 8mph - it doesn't take too much effort to beat this on a bike although there are a few hills around.
Most of the time the people I see sweating on their bikes are the ones who insist on climbing a hill in the highest gear. Some people must like to make life hard for themselves.0 -

Just what sort of whiff do you give off after a sweaty bike ride before settling down for your commute and a 12 hour day ? Can you imagine what that would do to your clothes ? You'd be the laughing stock and quickly sent to Coventry. This is the real world, not the Good Life.
Then you have winter. You know, the other 9 months of the year in England. Rain, fog, snow etc. Great biking up country roads on a damn pedalo in that weather, if you actually survived.
I don't appear to sweat whilst riding the 2 miles either side of my train, but I use talc, baby wipes and then fresh suit at the office. You don't cycle in your suit!
Someone told me you get wet 10 times per year on average. I've not kept a tally but I can only think of once when I got on the train physically "wet" but then I have winter and summer riding clothing.0 -
Call around your local taxi companies and see if you can negotiate something cheaper - if you can guarantee that you need x number of jounreys in a year then you should be able to come to some kind of arrangement - that's guaranteed income for them.
My previous employer used to run taxi's for staff to and from work on Sundays (no options of buses and in the middle oof nowhere) and they got a cheaper rate for guaranteed journeys and paid monthly rather than each journey.
Hope it works out

Accounts tend to be a little more expensive than regular fares (to the payer) because the cab office has to administer the account, hence someone in the cab office is employed to do it. The driver then gets a little less than a cash fare & the office pockets the difference as payment for their involvement.
I don't think a cab id going to do a deal for cheaper than £5 for 4 miles in this climate, the way the price of petrol is going & their time they would be doing it for nothing.
I would def consider a moped:D0 -
Get a banger Mondeo or something if you can't put up with an ecobox for a massive 2 mile journey - depreciation on anything newer than banger money will mean it'll cost you a fortune.0

On the tube in summer you can smell all those cyclists and walkers and it is overpowering and disgusting. How on earth they can work in that stench is beyond me and their attitude to others who have to breath in their toxic fumes is deplorable.
I am strangely reminded of this man.0 -
We were in a similar situation but the railway station where we are offers a discounted parking rate for "green vehicles" i.e. CO2 of 120 or less.
We opted for a Fiat 500 Dualogic which is 119 CO2, works out £35 per year in car tax and is very good on fuel. I am not the only one as the number of Smart cars in the car park has increased by a huge amount!
If discounted station parking isn't an option or required then I would go for Japanese "bangeromics" - a cheap Nissan Micra automatic or similar would be cheap and reliable.
Thanks
