I live in a pretty cheap area and a £5 taxi would be something like 3 or 4 miles.

That's a cycle journey. I would at least try it once or twice, before shutting out the option in lieu of paying £2500+ a year.

Even at a sedate speed of 10mph (you'd be surprised how fast you're going on a bicycle) that's a 20 minute journey.

Average wage would have you paying 10% of your income on taxis. More on the car. You're not going to find that kind of return anywhere else.

Even an electric assist bike + paying for theft insurance would beat the taxi route in 9 months or so.

Or another option would be a small 50cc moped. £100 test, less than £1k bike, £300 insurance.

If you need to carry large items to work or are physically disabled, disregard everything I've just said, of course. :P

    I'm with Edgey,

At least try a bike before ruling it out. If it were me I'd be on a bike. My 2nd option would be an electric bike, My 3rd option (because of the hassle and expense of getting a bike license otherwise this would be my second option) would be a moped. Mind you, you only need a CBT for a moped which is easy and costs about £100 every 2 years no lessons involved, so I would put the moped back into the second option.

For such a short journey, I would hate to use a taxi or a car purely for this journey.

I agree, I'd cycle. The hills might get you at first so take it easy. You will find them a lot easier after a bit.

Would a taxi driver cut you a deal for a regular job?

You can get various styles of electric bikes, or what about a small scooter/moped?
  • I agree with the others - cycling may be the way to go here - 4 miles is nothing really. If there is a large hill an electric bike will deal with it easily and it will stop you getting too hot and sweaty - so no change of clothes needed.

Station is a couple of miles away but up hill and down vale so a rather strenuous walk and not something I'd consider before an hour plus commute.

    Bone idleness.

Once you have walked this 'marathon' of 2 miles you get to rest your lazy harris on a train seat.

Or get the nearest bus & walk the remainder. A £5 taxi locally would barely get you to the other side of town so no distance at all to cycle really.

Alternatively you could ask about a contract with the taxi firm which might give you a bit of a discount.

Agreed that cycling sounds like the way to go! A lot cheaper to purchase than a car and no parking costs, you'll save an absolute fortune!

Bangernomics is not really an option but I don't think a new car is either. It would have to be an automatic as well.

What do you think / would you do ?

Why is bangernomics not an option?

As soon as you say automatic the price shoots up! If only because of supply and demand and that autos are rarer.
