Moving in with unemployed partner help on benefits

My partner is unemployed and moving into a new house where the rent is 350 p/m I am working part-time and making 450 p/m and going to move in with him.
I know he will get his rent/part of paid for him as he is unemployed and on jobseekers allowance. And also his council tax will be at a lower rate etc
I was wondering what would happen benefit-wise if I was to move in and how we would go about it.

you would be treated as a couple for benefits purposes.
If he is on contribution JSA then this will remain unchanged, if he is on income based then your income will likely cancel out any payment
If he is under 25 then his housing benefit will be based on the LHA for shared accommodation, as a couple you would be assessed at the one bedroom rate irrespective of age.
You can make a joint claim for housing benefit and council tax benefit.
Have a look on http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx and will give you an idea of what help you may get
How many hours do you work?0 -
Thanks for the reply. I work 14 hours per week but do not claim jobseekers as I don't think I'm entitled to anything due to getting more than minimun wage so making more than I would on jobseekers allowance a week.

You can still be both unemployed and employed at the same time if the employment you do is under 16 hours. So he can continue his JSA claim (it'll now be a couple claim) and it'll be reduced by whatever you earn. As you earn around £84 per week he'll still get a payment (as couples JSA is higher) and it won't affect the Housing Benefit claim at all.bonehead903028402 wrote: »Thanks for the reply. I have checked a couple claiming benefits gets 105 p/w
I already earn 107 p/w as a single person atm he earns 67.50 p/w
Would i have to claim benefits/be able to if we moved in together could I just not claim and he makes a claim as a single person.
And with housing benefits the LHA rate for my area is 280p/m the rent is 350p/m could he just claim LHA on behalf of us and I pay the extra 70p/m of would that be classed as benefit fraud.0 -

You have to make a joint claim.Gone ... or have I?0 -
You cannot claim as single people, simply because you will no longer be single people. Once you move in with your 'partner', you are a couple and couples are expected to support each other in many ways, as well as financially. Therefore any claims for ANY benefit that you make will need to be done as a couple/joint claim.0

Sorry £107 earnt less £10 disregard means you'd lose £97 from the £105 so he'd get £8 JSA. The LHA claim will continue as he'll get at least a penny in JSA. Is the LHA rate figure you quoted for a 1 bedroom flat. It's £395 here....That's quite low are you using the shared room rate?bonehead903028402 wrote: »I have checked a couple claiming benefits gets 105 p/w

LHA is for private landlord tenants, if you are renting from council or social landlord (which i presume as your rent is pretty low) and claiming/entitled to JSA income based you will be entitled to the eligible rentForums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0
