I have to say I've not been overly impressed with the RSPCA when I've called them in the past. They're just not interested in this kind of thing.

Worms I can get. I've only got to stick a spade into the veg beds and I get worm halves.

I've found the RSPCA pretty unhelpful in the past. I reported that a blackbird had been injured and was flapping around in the road outside my house and i was told there was nothing they could do...i seem to recall them having a bit of an air of 'if we came out to every injured blackbird blah blah blah'. In the end i placed it in a cardboard box and we took it to the vet and were told they would deal with it. Can't actually recall ever knowing what that meant for sure, but i pretty much felt it would involve ending its suffering.

I once reported a cat (RSPCA again) having made a permanent home in our garden and they then told me to wait another fortnight and that if it was still in my garden they would do something about it. Poor bloody cat. I got a bit shirty and a couple of days later someone came and took the poor thing away.

Just do the best you can Mr Bad, it's nice that you have a caring nature.

I would if I thought that my local vet was in any way remotely competent. Knowing them, they'd tell me that the problem was with its teeth, and I should have them cleaned for £300.

Ok, next thing I need to think about is heat overnight. No heating on in my house, and it gets a bit nippy at night, especially for a single naked bird. Now I've cheered myself up with that happy thought, any ideas? :D

    1. I want it to get dark so it's not up all night.
    2. Don't want to cook it. I'm very worried about it dehydrating. I am assuming it gets all its water from its food?

At the moment I have the tub wrapped in a towel, on top of my scorpion tank. Theres a 15w red bulb in there, with a sheet of ply between it and the towel. I'm just hoping for a little gentle warmth.

I think it's fingers crossed time. :undecided

Put it on a hot water bottle wrapped in towels. You might have to get up halfway through the night to reheat it though as I would only have it warm.
  • Do you have a spare red bulb? I've used these in the past for baby birds (use the same only larger for brooding chicks). If you could suspend this over a small cardboard box to cut out draughts then it should be fine.

For feeding you could also try cooking egg yolk (without white) and giving them tiny pieces of this. Was given this tip by a local wildlife place, but not sure how much of this you could safely use.

Don't forget you need to make sure that anything you feed comes out the other end! Wiping gently with damp cotton wool is usually effective if nature isn't taking its course (it's something that doesn't always happen automatically).

    Best of luck

    That's handy to know, thanks.
