mikeypoos, can you show us where to book the Pan Pacific(Singapore) for $50 or even £50?

I've had a couple of stays in the KL Pan Pacific, which is nice.

have alook at airasia.com for dirt cheap flights around malaysia and beyond,
langkawi is a tax free island, which means booze is 60% cheaper than the mainland.

  • Natural jungle in Borneo or Sarawak (East Malaysia) is nice (where they filmed the Survivor)
Borneo is also the home of many national parks and an abundance of tropical wildlife and nature. For example: Mulu National Park with the world largest cave. http://www.mulupark.com/html/index/index.htm

or try Sipadan Island in Sabah, Malaysia if you love diving. One of the five top diving destinations in the world.

or Tioman Island at the east coast of West Malaysia?
or Langkawi Island in the west coast of West Malaysia (which is crowded with tourists)

Not sure why Mikeypoos, he says he's a travel agent, would post something like that to get your hopes up. Never mind, maybe a typo.
I too found Malaysia friendly, I used to make a point of flying with Malaysia Airlines in order to have a 'stop-over' there. Sadly because of rising airline prices and reduced availability compared to some other airlines, I haven't done so recently. Hopefull, others can supply more up to date info. Though, haven't visited the East Coast yet.

I really love Malaysia, agree with everyone here that it is a great place to stay with very friendly people.

Went there on honeymoon in 2002 for 3 weeks. Stayed in KL, Langkawi and Penang. All were great places to stay, all very different.

From the top of my head:

Meals: you can have a really great meal from the hawker stands for approx £1pp. Normal restaurants about £2-4pp. Top notch luxury restaurants maybe about £10pp at the most.

Beer: Ouch, when I first went to KL in 1999 we went to a pub in the Bangsar region had a few beers and they each came to ~£4 each. On the other occasions when we have been out clubbing it has been cheaper to buy a bottle of spirits and mixers to share. It's not really a drinking sort of place, the alcohol is heavily taxed.

Cocktails: Paid between £1-2 for a cocktail at our hotel in Langkawi. A lot cheaper as it is tax free.

If you are looking at places to stay can really recommend these two in Langkawi and KL. Totally different but really both so stunning!

The above cost us about £22 a night but is often on deals of buy one night get one free. Is 4 star but in a really lush location.

Paid about £60 a night for the two of us. 5 star, right in the middle of the city. Total luxury, if it makes any sense is much more than a 5 star compared to others.

Enjoy - if you need any more info just ask. I could go on and on, I love it!!!

You mentioned hiking: if you are fit enough try Mt Kinabalu, getting to the top at sunrise gives a real sense of achievement and if the weather is clear some wonderful views.

Malaysia is one of the most hassle-free countries I've visited, pity the booze is so expensive.

If you have the time going inland to one of the villages in E Malaysia is well worth doing.
