malaysia in march?

hi all

Me & OH have decided to go for a well earned jaunt to malaysia in march.

Its our first ever non uk hol together and we want it to be great.

seems likely that we will travel around the country taking in singapore/ KL adn beaches and maybe some mountain hiking if we can squeeze it in.

We will get flight only and then travel about. few dayts here & there on public transport booking into places either before we get there or when we arrive.

Ive independently travelled like this in a few places ( mexico/cuba/ venezuela/ DR/ japan) and Im fine with it

Anything special we need to know?

I the weather going to be A-ok ( brochures & LP online say yes, fine all yer round)
For a nice -ish hotel what will we look to pay in say singapore
Anyone recommend any great beaches with nice hotel/ guest house?

Very new to travelling in Asia, only been to japan and that was an experince to say the least!

We just want everything to be perfect :D

TIA

oh and also how much are we going to spend on this do you think?

    flying from london?
A fairly nice meal will cost?
    A beer will cost?
    A cocktail will cost?

    Cheers

  • We went in March and the rainy season starts sort of mid March, depending on where you are. KL was OK til just after we left, then we went to Penang - the rain started the day we left. Then on to Langkawi, the rain reached there a few days after we left on 15th March though we did have one shower and the raindrops could've punched holes in you!!
We were lucky! Only thing is, we visited a few waterfalls that would've been beautiful, only they were dry!
It's an incredible place. I hope you have a good time.
we got flights only too, though we'd never done it before. It was a great adventure. The people are genuinely friendly and helpful. I wish we were going again!
It's really cheap and you can eat for just a few pounds. I could go on and on about the place! we went a long time ago, but our flights came to £800 ish and we took £800 to cover all our costs - including all our internal flights. We managed just fine on that - the rate then was £1 to 6 ringit

  • Malaysia is a great place to start your first visit in Asia. The people are friendly and speak good English if you get stuck. Malaysia (and indeed Thailand) have a slightly odd climate from one coast to the other. The west coast (Penang, Langkawi, Pangkor Laut etc) will be fine in March (bar the odd tropical storm for an hour or so). My big tip is to purchase all transport from local agents in Malaysia. Buses are of high quality if you pay a little bit extra - I was travelling from Singapore to KL but only got a bus across the causeway to Johor Bahru and a bus to KL from there was a fraction of the cost and big massive reclining seat with lovely air con.

In Singapore, I would book something like the Pan Pacific for about $50 a night - very cheap and a nice centrally located 4 star hotel. However, try not to spend too much time in Singapore as it's really not a great Asian city - a bit too westernised for my tastes.

Mikeypoos, we are in the UK. We don't use $. Do you mean £50? You certainly won't get the Pan Pacific for 50 Singapore dollars.

I normally stay here; http://www.ymcaih.com.sg/index.htm whilst in Singapore, as I like the location. It's better than you would imagine. Around £30 to £35 per night.
