Would it matter? "EU" or "GB? Plate? - Can I Use A Yellow Front Plate?

Actually there are no regulations regarding plate size, even for EU type approved cars. The only regulations are regarding font size, spacing and borders.
For imports the font size requirements are the same as for the motorbike plate but only if "the design of the vehicle cannot accommodate a standard size plate".
I've got a standard size 13x6.5 plate, wider than a motorbike plate and the same size as you see on Previas, Delicas etc. That isn't the issue, the reason I occasionally get hassle is that my car is fitted with backlit plate holders instead of standard numberplate lights, and it's impossible to make a plate that is both reflective and transparent without ending up with a texture on the background. the TVRs with similar plates have the same issue.
In full, it's
The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Type Approval AND the vehicle’s construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates".
Size isn't specified, but font size, spacing, margin is, so that pretty much covers it.
Margins aren't covered for imports though, so you can have smaller plates.0 -

That's the one. Also the specified size is smaller, 64 or 68mm tall IIRC. I forget which, whereas it's 80-odd mm for EU cars, it's basically the motorbike font. This is the offending plate0 -
I knew there was something about spacing, but it was the size of the margins, not the spacing between letters.
I think I read the bit about the motorbike plates being wrong in the bumpf that the DVLA sent out in the info pack to register a self imported grey import.
There was a lot in there about SVA etc, aswell, but I am sure that is where I must have read it.
I must admit when I did import these vehicles from Japan the DVLA were most helpful, and very efficent.0 -
Probably.
Personally I couldn't give a damn so long as the plate is easily readable to the human eye. If you really want a Man U flag instead of an EU flag, and yellow plates up front. So long as I can read the number anything else you do is between you and the Police.
That said I do get annoyed when I get told my plate is illegal when actually it's not. 13x6.5" plate with the smaller motorbike font on it. Perfectly legal on grey imports.
That's a new one on me?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

But not type fonts so small, you need a magnifying glass to read them. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
You can't have it saying 'EU' it has to be GB or nothing.0
