Would it matter? "EU" or "GB? Plate? - Can I Use A Yellow Front Plate?

I was wondering, is it legal if I got a new front number plate, but that said "EU" on it instead of "GB?"

Also, is there any law on the colour of the front/back number plate? By default it's White/Yellow, but can I have it yellow for the front too?

I'm only asking because I saw my car but with an EU plate and it definitely perked up the look of the car with the front yellow plate.

No, you cannot have a yellow front plate.

    Here is the detail.

I've got Euro GB plates front and back. But the front is white.

Why would you want it to say EU?

The only reason to have the EuroFlag/GB marker is to avoid the need to have a horrible white GB sticker on your car when you drive it in Europe. If you don't intend on doing that, just get a plate with no flag at all.

If you really want a yellow front then choose a plate supplier that uses yellow protective film, then "forget" to remove it, but frankly if I saw a UK car with a yellow front plate I'd just assume the driver was an idiot who stuck the wrong plate on their car.

Hench, the reason I wanted to use EU instead ;)

Good excuse for plod to pull you over and give the car the once over.

    ^^^ Yeah, pretty much.

Still pretty obviously a UK car. I don't know of any right hand drive EU countries that use the same format numberplates as us just on a yellow background.

Unless you're planning to use a false numberplate too, in which case why not just steal the plates from a random Polish car and be done with it? ;)

Why do people feel the need to mess with numberplates on their cars?

It's an important identifier used for a number of legal and safety reasons - it needs to be in a certain place on the car in a certain format, deal with it!

It's something you're required to have that offers no benefit to the individual driver. Is it really that surprising that people want to mess with it and make it look a bit better.

Not justifying doing it, just saying I'm can see why people do. Especially since these days it's mainly just used for issuing fines through the post and for building up a huge database of your day to day movements.

Would these people be the first to moan if someone who had hit their car and disappeared could not be identified because of their vague tampered with plate?

Not only are the plate colours specified in law, so are the text characteristics. Thickness height width etc. No compute graphics.
