Vodafone reckon I used WAP whilst abroad but I didn't

I went to Malaysia recently and used my phone to send a few text but that's all.

Vodafone have now billed me and they reckon I used my phone for approx £40 of WAP usage.

My phone is set for mobile use only and I have never used it for WAP in this country or Malaysia.

I have raised a complaint and am waiting to talk to a manager.

has anyone else had this problem or can anyone offer advice as Vodafone are currently maintaining I used the internet abroad but I know I did not.

    What phone do you have?

Many smartphones use data even when they are idle for updates could that be an issue?

By updates I mean things like Weather, Email, Facebook status etc, NOT a phone software update.

Many apps run in the background and check for new data all the time, it's possible it was simply checking for email as thats Rims forte. You say the phone was set for mobile use only, is it possible you missed an app I don't know how BB's deal with turning data off completly?

Why would you have a BlackBerry if you're not going to use it for email/internet?!? *confused*
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

You connected to the internet whether you knew it or not. People seem to be under the impression that a lot of networks are waiting for you to go abroad, check you're phone's capable of connecting to the internet then make up random bills for you.
If you used email, blackberry messengers, facebook, a weather app, maps, twitter or any number of things then you connected to the internet, even if you didn't consciously use any of them the charges are still most likely valid.

On any phone (especially my new X10 Mini, where a lot of the stuff has small adverts at the bottom) I create a fake access point that won't connect and set that to default, and delete the UK ones until I get back - that solves any issues with not being 100% certain whether your data is disabled or not

Haven't heard it described as WAP in a few years...

I have my phone set for mobile phone use only.
I only picked the Blackberry because I like the phone but I never use it for internet usage.
I have used this phone abroad in the Carribean and Europe but have never incurred these charges. All I do is turn on the phone when I get off the plane and merely use the phone for the odd phone call and text.
I can't understand why I would be charged in Malaysia for WAP when I didn't use it for this and did nothing different to when I visited the Carribean or Europe
