My husband has AS (ankylosing spondylitis) and FM (fibromyalgia) and has found Reiki helps. After being told by unsymapthetic consultants the pain is all in his mind decided that anything has got to be better than nothing to attempt to alleviate the problems he has.

An old school friend has become a practioner and offered a free taster session. Sceptism set in after the first session as he didnt really feel any benefits but after the second and third ones he felt much better and had more pain relief than taking any pills and potions. So set up a once weekly session for 30 mins to work along side conventional meds and along with pacing seeing some of the benefits now.

Pacing is very important with such conditions as ME/FMS/CFS/SLE. And similar.

As for the pain being all in his head, maybe print this out and get him to show his doctor next time. http://www.ukfibromyalgia.com/advice/you-are-not-imagining-it.html. There has been a lot of money put in research in America and they have, as a result, found proof and it can only get better :)

Multiple Sclerosis was once considered a mental disorder as was many other now well known diseases.

It's worth mentioning too that Fibromyalgia is included in the Tenth Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) published by WHO in 1992 as follows:

M79 Other soft tissue disorders, not elsewhere classified
    M79.0 Rheumatism, unspecified
    Fibromyalgia
    Fibrositis

Reiki is interesting. I think that it can be theraputic and so in turn create a more positive mind which can help deal with pain much better.

Music/meditation and similar can all be beneficial but entirely dependant on the individual as to how beneficial they can be.

I have it in my lower back although not sure which type as undergoing investigations this month..
I try really hot baths, as hot as I can stand it with radox.although a weak reliever it does help for a while...

Hope it doesn't last to long for you and eases soon

I have recently developed Osteoarthritis in my right hip and lower back. This thread has really helped as I am still trying to find things that help on the bad days, so thank you all who suggested stuff.
On a bad day I have a choice.....I can do nothing because the pain is so bad or I can do nothing because the painkillers have turned me into a zombie. That is not how I want to live my life!
I go to the gym about 3 times a week and although it hurts like hell, overall it definitely reduces the pain levels. I have also just started some aqua strengthening work....it's a bit early to say if that is going to work. I find one of the main benefits of the exercise is in improving my mental health as I am prone to depression. I have tried glucosamine which hasn't helped but am about to try 'I-move' which also has green lipped mussel and something else in it on the suggestion of a friend.
All those of you with this and similar problems have my sympathy, it can be so hard to put up with the aches and when the joint 'nips' you for trying to make a particular movement....well WOW that hurts!

First thing of course is regular reviews with the GP - and keeping him up-to-date with any 'alternatives' I am trying....some things couter-indicate prescribed meds, even 'natural' things like herbs!

I have a couple of wheat bags and love them!

A mug of warm (but not hot) milk and a couple of squares of dark chocolate....I find it relaxing and the 'happy' signals the brain sends out in response to the chocolate helps to control mild pain too.

I like the idea of sex.....but alas for me it would have to be the solo variety...which is somehow less satisfying!....especially as the best part is always the cuddles afterwards which is hard to do alone!

I think the Reiki helped my husband more as the school friend who carries out the sessions is also has FMS along with hypermobility syndrome and they have regular chats together about what helps each other. She has now started concocting muscle rubs using herbal remedies and again although my husband was sceptical about it working did notice some relief in one of his knees playing up.

It isnt the GP that doesnt believe my husbands pain levels its the actual 'professionals' who he were refered to. Initially he went for help regarding the AS then as none of the medications were working, backed up by blood tests they just slapped on the fibro lable. Now when ever he goes to see anyone and says he has noticed new symptoms they are just attached to either the AS or FMS rather than looking at a bigger picture to see if anything else can be done to help him.
