Finding ways to ease the pain.

No medical advice wanted, but a question on how you deal with pain when the medication isn't working.

I seem to become immune to medication after a while, so need a medicine review but in the meantime what have you found eases the pain?

I have a tens which can help, sometimes.

I have used hot water bottles, although I have found that, sometimes, it can make things worse.

I have a deep heat spray, a glucosamine gel, to apply.

I try resting, but stiffen up so have to move about when I can.

So, without talking about medicines, what do you do to ease the pain.

I'm willing to try different things until I can get medicines changed, although the one thing I'm not sure on is getting drunk. I don't think that would be a good idea, somehow :D

Yes, sero negative poly arthritis and osteo arthritis, amongst other problems

Have been in a lot of pain this weekend. It's been building for a week or so but is particularly awful at the moment :(

I find walking eases my pain even though it hurts me to walk I do it and gradually the enjoyment of the walk overtakes the pain it causes me.. its sounds silly but it always works.. and if the sun is shining so much the better... I have O/A in many joints and have had one Hip-replacement so far the other is pending.. I also find swimming lifts my mood and lessens the affect of the pain in my joints

    Hi,

    Ohhh:(
My Hubby suffers with osteo and I know how painful it can be.

I agree...sometimes painkillers either aren't enough or you get used to them.
I find the weather doesn't help either. Does this happen with you?
Also, some days are OK and some days it just pops up.
    Do you notice this?

Big hugs to you and I hope you feel better soon.:)
  • Hi,

Not sure if I can help but here ae a few suggestions, if they help great, if there not the sort of thing you need then just throw my suggestions in the nearest bin :rotfl:

How about seeing a homoepath? There are remedies like Arnica which might help.

How about massage? relaxation etc? Not sure if it will help with pain as I don't have arthritis but I do have much pain in joints and muscles and I find that surrounding muscles tense to compensate for hurt muscles, so anything to relax the muscles helps.

I hope your medicine review happens soon.
  • How about a really big-assed hot/cold water bag you can relax and lay back on? I found this site several years ago by accident - fomentek dot com. Don't know if that kind of link advertising is allowed here but if not they can always pull the post down.
    All the best.

We went for a short walk earlier, tanith, which was nice. My ankle has swollen now though, so need to elevate it.

I've thought of swimming a lot, recently, but, because I can't walk unaided, I'm not sure about getting into the pool :o:o

Yes, the weather can have an affect on how much pain I'm in, todolistsocd :( Thank you for your post :)

Owing to an intestinal inflammatory disorder, I cant tolerate lots of painkillers and anti-inflamatories (sp?) so I have to find other ways of dealing with pain.

To start with, I use ice packs on inflamed and swollen joints, rather than heat pads. For me this gives relief quicker and for longer than a heat pad which sometimes irritates the joint, even tho it gives some initial relief.

Also voltarol gel which is a topical pain killer does help with the pain, and is available on prescription in large tubes. It is actually a painrelief gel.

The other thing that I do (and I realise this doesnt work for everyone) is meditate. I can meditate through lower levels of pain and the relaxation seems to ease the pain - I suppose it helps to combat muscle spasm.

One final suggestion - if you have a hydrotherapy pool, or a warm water pool near you, gentle exercise supported by warm water can help to ease painful joints.

Hope this helps, you have my sympathy, chronic pain can be very debilitating.

For some people it may be good but for others, leaning or a particular joint or being in a certain position, let alone being able to get into a position...not so good.
Also, how can you feel good about something like that when you have got pain on your mind.

Good suggestion but not for everyone;)
