I find the paint on my 05 Mondeo to be pretty good quality.

If you want to experience easily damaged paintwork then buy a Blue Subaru. I had a World Rally Blue WRX which was very easily scratched then replaced it with a Subaru Legacy in a Dark Blue Mica Metallic that could be scratched by looking at it.

Is it possible that Ford are trying to save money using less resilient paint?

Though a lot of these new fancy paint colours are tricky to get right. But surely in the OP's position it is a problem caused over time. And therefore it must be a fault.with the paint.
