Indeed, OP if you can try redoing your stats whilst plugged into your NTE Master test socket.

No it wont affect security, it's only a jpeg picture which I thought was a bit big to post directly as an image in the thread.

If your on the 12 Mbit package now, this explains why there was little benefit to it because you were syncing very close to your current maximum on the 8 Mbit package so you would see very little improvement from the higher capped connection speed.

There is one loss of sync since your router was rebooted which means your stability isn't perfect unless you disconnected the phone cable leaving the router on.

That downstream SN margin is a bit low for a 6dB profile. It could be about 6.5dB after a resync. Running routerstatlite might be worth doing to monitor things. It's a bit buggy but it does the job.

The lower than expected sync speed as already mentioned could do with investigation. Extensions and wiring problems might be causing it. Missing filters could also affect things.
every now and again when I am doing something that doesnt require internet connection I remove the power plug from the socket for the router - it didn't need rebooted, I didn't realise doing that would cause any problems.
yes I take on board what you say about internal wiring I got a extension reel from argos (not sure of the length)
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5520255/Trail/searchtext%3ETELEPHONE+EXTENSION.htm
and I use a microfilter on the phne connected to the main socet, and another two microfilters for the second phone and the router - both on the extension reel
    perhaps the problem lies there.

An extension filtered at the master socket end is fine. What is bad news is running a router on a plugin extension.

problem with that - BE wanted me to plug my router into the test socket but I couldnt, my master socket is in my hall and my router is in a cupboard with my desktop computer built up in front of the door of the cupboard, I would have to take my computer apart to get at the router - I never use that cupboard so I thought it would save space and protect the router to have it in there, it would take at least half an hour to get into the cupboard (I have loads of furniture placed around my computer table)

ahh that sounds like its the problem, would I be better with a proper extension fitted
I dont know if its worth the effort for a couple of extra mbs, my real worry is for the future when I want to have speeds of 24 mbs+
I did mention that I have a couple of microfilters on each of the plugs on the extension reel, one for the phone and one for the router

sorry to disappoint, but you're not going to get 24meg + on that or any other phone line unless you change over to an FTTC/FTTP (i.e. fibre) connection, and even then you may not get that much depending on soo many factors. The latest coming out of BT for their Infinity fibre product is a base level of 5 meg minimum.

If this is what you're considering for the future, I wouldn't waste money on a "proper" extension just now, as if & when you do go for a fibre product, it's not just a case of unplug one router and plug in the new VDSL one, Openreach have to install new-type consumer terminal (master socket) for it, so you'll more than likely have to rearrange your house/furniture/pc installation in order to accommodate the new service (unless you run your pc on wifi to the router instead of ethernet)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

As Gunjack says you won't be getting much faster whatever you do. The main reason I mentioned not running routers on plugin extension was for others who may read this thread later.

The bugbear for ADSL is electrical noise pickup on the ringwire which reduces your speed if it gets fed to the signal pair through the ring capacitor in the master socket. That can be prevented by disconnecting the ring wire at the master socket end but isn't possible with a plug in extension unless you cut into the cable or fit an iPlate which also stops the noise getting back in. iPlates cost about £10 or so I think.

You will never achieve more than around 12mbps with your line attenuation of 40db.
You would be advised to either relocate your router near the master socket and either use homeplugs or a long ethernet cable to connect to your PC.
Other wise remove the bell wire connection on your extension wiring as previously advised.

If you are not willing to do what others have advised you will be stuck with the speed you are presently on.

PS Sticking your router in a cupboard with no ventilation is a recipe for early failure.

I think your right I would be better to stick with what I have currently got at present and then upgrading all the wiring for the fibre optic when I need faster speeds.
I am currently running off my ethernet but as most routers are wireless its easy (and cheap) to convert to wireless.
I think I will tell the BE technician not to bother reducing the noise on my line because the biggest cause of my slowdown is due to internal wiring problems and reducing the noise would probably not correct the speed issue much and might only make my connection unreliable
