isp removing noise protection pros and cons - is it worth it

my new contract with my isp upgrades my download speed from 8mbs to 12mbs (they use ADSL-2) but I haven’t noticed much change in my speed, I have done speed test and have found that I am only receiving about 1mbs more than my old contract.
I have contacted my isp and done all the tests that they have told me to without any joy so now the isp has offered to remove some of the noise protection from my line to see if that would help with my speed – he said it shouldn’t affect my telephone line quality but it might affect my internet reliability but if that happens he can put the protection back in place – does anyone know what he is talking about and is it a good idea, will it affect my telephone /internet quality, or should I tell him to leave it alone.
He is waiting on an e-mail from me to tell him if I want to go ahead or not.

Sounds like a load of BS but I'm prepared to be corrected.
If you post your router line statistics we can advise you better.

It is true, and the OP must be talking about TalkTalk. If you are an LLU customer, TalkTalk are surprisingly helpful about tweaking your line configuration for maximum internet performance.
Just picture asking BT to increase the line gain! It would take 30 minutes of waiting and call transfers to get through to anyone who even understood your request, and several days' wait to see it actioned.
P.S. Here's an example from the TalkTalk forum where a LLU customer requests (and is given) a different line profile to improve internet performance..

no the isp is actually "BE There", my old value package finished so they put me on their new value package (with a discount), so you think giving him permission to go ahead would be a good idea.It is true, and the OP must be talking about TalkTalk. I can live with the old speed but if I can get a faster speed without upsetting my telephone connection that would be better.0 -
if I change isp in the future what would happen to the noise protection would it revert back to default or would it remain at the level set by the BE There technician.

Have a look at your router it will have a make and model number on it somewhere. Could be a speedtouch of some description.
Try:-
From the routers IP address which is usually http://192.168.1.254 Broadband Connection >
DSL Connection >
Details.

sounds like they are going to move you from interleaved profile to fastpath...the "noise reduction" they mention sounds more like removing the interleaving to try and squeeze a bit more speed out of the line by reducing the data overheads. Also, they may reduce your profiled snrn down a bit (which increases the amount of noise on the broadband connection but not affecting the phone).......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
