Some of those diesel tuning boxes are a bit of a con with regards to mpg.The cheaper ones plug into the fuel rail and trick the ecu into thinking not as much fuel is flowing which then increases the pressure, so power increases and it makes the trip computer read mpg incorrectly as it isn't actually measuring the correct amount of fuel being used.
There will be some gains as the increase in power will generally mean less throttle is needed but I bet if you did a brim to brim tank test it wouldn't be as good as the optimistic claims from the people selling the boxes.

Poosibly true for some diesel tuning boxes, but certainly not for all of them. I used a DTUK box on a previous car and saw an improvement in MPG when measured at the pump rather than the trip computer.

Valid points but, as far as I'm aware, all the diesel tuning boxes trick the ecu into thinking that not as much fuel is flowing as it should be.

The more sophisticated the degree of trickery the more the box costs.

    like what has been said.

there isnt any point to mapping them because your not going to get a desired affect i.e MPG gain and very little BHP gains.

you can improve you MPG and BHP by making subtle changes, K&N replacemnt panel filter, stanless exhaust (by the way if your thinking i dont want it to sound like a fart tin their made to your specified noise level so if you want it quiet then thats how it will sound), inline fuel savers.

Sorry i wrote my reply and didn't press the post and went elsewhere and cam back and hit post without refreshing.

Seems that it isn't worth it but i will look into the other suggestions so thanks again.

You'd probably benefit more from changing your driving style(as would most people). One of the things I do is show people how to increase their mpg and have seen some massive increases after relatively little instruction.

Still wouldn't use one. The only way to have this done properly is by a real mapper looking at the live feed from the engine. They can lean out fuel where needed and play with boost by re-programming the ecu. 'Fooling it' or using a plug and play box carries a lot of risk and for me are far too dangerous to play with.

PJB - With a non-turbo car you need to get gases out as quick as possible and help air intake. Decent servicing and as said, a K&N plus exhaust should help a bit but it won't be too drastic!

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

    Not touching that.

Rolling road map? Needs a specialist to look at it and properly understand the motor. The example in the press is simply diesel mapping, they have no doubt cut his boost for the economy settings.

    Probably well advised.

It seems Viezu used to trade as 'Chipped UK' and were well known in tuning circles. A bit of Googling will reveal why.

Some of them use a resistor costing pennies and package it up in a nice fancy black box then charge £100 for them.Bargain.
